Thread regarding IBM layoffs

What the current severance package like at IBM?

I have a warm offer from another company but I’m wondering if it is more lucrative for me to hang on, performing at a mediocre level, until Big Blue decides to terminate me. Any hints of exit packages look like? I’ve heard 1 month severance, 3 months, 4 months, etc.

If you do not know, please do not guess.

there was a policy that changed 2-3 yrs ago that restricts severance to 1 month vs factoring in prior service (which it did before)

Don't work for IBM, the only certainty with IBM is that you will get laid off.

The CA issue is that the employer has to ensure the employee is paid every penny due within 30 days. Which for a company like IBM is a challenge. Especially when it comes to Sales commissions. They can't even get it right on a Quarterly basis when they had a 90 day window.

I think it depends on the state.
I heard in California it cost companies a lot to let someone go.

In the US it's 1 month upon your exit period

in Canada it used to be one month per year of service. depending on your age you could get more if you take IBM to court

"Performing at a mediocre level" is likely to get you instant promotion to a first/second line manager. If you want to be pushed, be diligent and work extended hours to complete your projects, be client-focussed and develop your personal skills and constantly look for better ways to deliver service. So many of the best and most dedicated people I knew in IBM were doing exactly this but were jettisoned regardless. The people who delegated most tasks and had time to cosy-up to higher management and create endlesss Powerpoint decks, pontificating about their 'personal achievents' were retained. It's why IBM is such a failure and a toxic place to be. So bail out while you can if you really want to leave.

If you have such a warm offer then why would you want to stay? By the time IBM gets around to putting you on a PIP (or whatever) that warm offer may not be there for you.

Why do companies offer severance at all?

There is some evidence that IBM is moving to a more PIP type of environment. If it’s measurable (sales, billable hours, utilization) IBM is encouraging PIP’s. If IBM is exiting a business (measurable or not measurable) then they tend to offer a severance with the latest offering being 30/90. There is no guarantee IBM will continue to offer these terms as the terms are getting less and less as we move forward. With all of that said, I would say don’t bet against yourself and hope for a severance when there is opportunity being offered. Its always best to move forward and not sideways

If you are RAd it's one month in exit

FLM here, been awhile but used to be
30/90
30 days notice, 90 day severance
PTO payout, not including personal choice
1yr employee rate medical (different coverage)
1yr after that 12 month cobra

There’s no guarantee this will be offered or that a RA will occur.
Stop the negativity as I’m sure your team will be feeling it too, take the new opportunity and start the positivity in your work like.

If you leave voluntarily you get no severance, other than the ability to slack off for your last two weeks.

It use to be multiple months but I heard it's now only 1 month now. Someone needs to confirm.
