Opportunity to Rejoin XOM

I have an opportunity to re-join EMIT organization. I was laid off in 2020 and a know friend a colleague who still works at XOM recently reached out sharing a job opening they have and sharing that I would be a good fit if I wanted to return. He did shared that things are not the same prior to covid but if I wanted to re-join and wanted to consider the role in his team. For those that are in EMIT, can you all share the state of affairs on the ground and would you consider an opportunity to re-join if something presented itself in the current environment? Appreciate it. Thanks for help in advance.

OP. Your friend has nice ok intentions, but, it's not possible under your layoff terms. You are indelibly marked as a poor fit for EM. Go as as contractor if you really have a skill to sell

I say yes if you have a sponsor who will protect you during ranking, again. And then again, your sponsor might move in the future or worse retire and then you will be in limbo. Save yourself from this doggo-eat-doggo company, I am very sure, life is better out there somewhere.

EMIT is staffing up in one department for one specific major project on the books and need people with those skills. Other EMIT departments are downsizing due to capital budget cuts to be able to support the first project. Depending on your situation, you may be better off to come in as a contractor and negotiate a higher substantial rate with OT because once that project is complete, chances are, that department will down size. That's business not politics.

You realize that the info in your opening comment makes you identifiable, right? By 'Identifiable', I don't mean self-identifying as something you're not, which is often the case these days. Rather, I mean you are identifiable to other people as the person who was fired from EMIT in 2020 and re-hired.

May be someone from HR can Chime in and confirm whether those laid offs terms restrict them from reapplying from XOM jobs in the future. Come on HR atleast Chime in and confirm this much info. I know you guys generally avoid anything head on, but please help clear this up.

@lae+1hPiC8Vy, actually you seem to be a troll because you seem to either not work for the company or have no idea on the lay off terms. The lay off terms didn't barred those being laid off. They can reapply for jobs in future. Now whether XOM would want to hire them back or not would depend on how desperate XOM is for that person's knowledge unless the mgmt. HR, or hiring manager just have a sympathy for such a candidate getting caught into layoff and want to give them a chance to the opportunity. Knowing the toxicity in the company my gut feel is they won't hire such a candidate unless they desperately need the candidates knowledge.

Interesting , I heard anybody that was laid off had to sign a form that they wouldn’t apply for a job at EM ever. The reason you received money. Trolling?

Don't join man unless you have aspiration to become next hotshot! EMIT leadership has no plans or vision. External market doesn't respect nor value XOM experience (as it once used to). And besides what exactly pulling your strings to return back into a company that laid you off and we all know how the lay off was conducted. They treated all that got laid off poorly, forget about respect and dignity the executives promised. So what exactly is even making you think to consider the return? Is it money, getting a closure to the lay off, people that you were surrounded by and still value? You may want to ask that first.

While you’ll find lots of negative opinions here, the truth is, EM will need to be a smaller company to compete and will continue to downsize. Unfortunately, the employees will suffer. Talk to any retirement eligible person and they’re taking the first option to leave. You might negotiate a high entry point, but just realize that the stability is gone.

OP, really? What's wrong with you? EM is in the middle of its fourth round of layoffs right now (2019, 2020, 2021, and 2022) Lots, I mean, lots of people will be NSIed this year. They are been told the "good news" right now and in the next two to three weeks. Why would you want to come back? You will be used as NSI material upon arrival. Move on. Just move on and leave EM behind.

If you mean re-join as an employee, then no. As a contractor/consultant, then yes. Negotiate a great pay rate for yourself, then you'll see how much they really want you back.

Stocking up on NSI workers. In EM if you had been perceived as a poor worker, you will never have a career here. Don’t waste your time.

You must know that you're only gonna get negative answers on this forum. This place is not a good sounding board for your decision. That being said, my advice is to negotiate HARD for what you want as far as comp, cause once you're in the door you're unlikely to see significant gains in comp or benefits.

Your friend is right; it’s not the same. Meaning the good souls have all left and now it’s a cutthroat work environment. Trust no one as they are looking for ways to take credit for your work. If you’re seeking long term career in tech, look elsewhere. It’s not worth the toxic culture. Your friend may protect you for a year or two then they’ll move or you will and you’ll be among sharks. Spare yourself the angst!
