I'm inside and I can see the problem as large as life. It's the culture. The person above you on the org chart is infallible; the one above them is a god. You never question a decision made above your position. Life at Ford is about managing your career first, managing your job second. The vibe is that something is amiss for certain. But if we pretend it's not there, it isn't. The company is off-balance. Jim Farley, shuffles the chairs so regularly that massive programs are routinely off-schedule and new reorganizations and conflicting initiatives start before the old ones are half finished. This results in intense micro-management while sacrificing any broader vision of the business. Now I know why most automotive companies are headed by - SHOULD be headed by - those with manufacturing experience and not marketers. Yes, Ford can fool its employees and consumers but we'll soon see, they can't fool Wall Street. As they say, it's darkest before it gets really, really dark. The light, for Ford, is not around the next bend.

JF wants to offshore all the core engineering and manufacturing, an area he lacks any expertise and simply wants to turn the US operations into a sales and marketing arm, similar to Toyota. This is just the first step.

This post resonates with me. It describes every area in Ford I have worked so perfectly.
The leader of the area, having little relevant knowledge or skills, sets about making his/her mark with reorgs and grandiose hair-brained projects. As whiffs of failure become apparent they double-down and surround themselves with worshipping toadies and dispatch voices of reason. Then in 3-5 years poof the leader is shuffled to another area and the process starts over with a new leader.

Each time I have asked why Ford continually installs LLx with no skills, I hear because they are on the leadership track and all LLx are generalists. LLx do not need to know anything about the areas they manage. What a load of Fordium.

EVs are being developed by political science...not engineering science.. The hybrid with a small battery to assist and help a high efficiency ICE make much more sense. I rented a Toyota Sienna Hybrid Mini Van that got 36mpg...Never did I see a charging station on my vacation. The Fusion Hybrid was good for 40some mpg. Same powertrain is in the Maverick and Fudugly Escape too.

We are wasting big resouces making EVs for the few high rollers who can afford them.

Wait till the power company shuts off your EV charger for the good of the grid.

It goes much further than this.

1st problem: "the plan" leads to Ford completely dismantling itself and what it was. If the plan fails, then what has Ford to go back to?!?

2nd problem: "the plan" is chasing an automotive future everyone is gonna hate, with much higher operational cost for EVs per kwh, with mandatory subscriptions to keep the car even going, with total brand subordination, being at the mercy of your OEM for battery replacement, and ZERO right to self repair. All software is locking everything into place. Be prepared for them new repair bills boy, they will have to supply an entire mechanics industry.

3rd problem: what if it goes somewhat like the gaming industry where you actually don't own the car (or the game), but you only own a 'right to use' to it? And that right can be revoked? For misbehavior for example or violations of subscription agreements, like an attempt to commit self-repair on the vehicle? Just look at gaming consoles. sure you own the console... but... if you misbehave they can lock you out of your account. And then you don't have access to anything. Sure your games are still installed on the device. But they won't start up since your account can't be reached.

At the end of the day: when Tesla did it, they wanted to change the car industry and it was cool. But now that the Big Three want it, you know that dream is dead.
