Thread regarding IBM layoffs

Too many people are hoping to be laid off

I think that says more about the current state of the company than anything else could.

One of the things that the pension plan provided was an incentive to stay and work hard until you had qualified. Without that, there is no incentive for employees to stick around when something better comes along.

Our boss told us it'd still take 4 - 5 years (at the latest raise rate) to get people paid what they're worth (and IBM says they pay competitively? Well - at about 80-85 % of Competitive is closer to fact).

So we're losing lots of top talent. When I asked one why more aren't leaving (based on his discussions on his way out) he said "waiting to retire"

Before anybody slams the older employees - all on our team continue to work hard and effectively - they're just choosing not to jump ship within a few years of retirement.

So I'm expecting a succession of retirements of top talent in the next few year to decimate the team.

If both compensation were better and there was no atmosphere of fear that intentions would be known and hiring and planning could occur (as a small high power team it take years to effectively come up to speed)

I will probably join them, if a bit earlier retirement than planned, as the orphaned work just gets dumped on those left. (I have too much of that already)

I know what you mean @dlg. A manager I briefly had was terrible as a human being yet he recently got a promotion. Evidently I have no good judgement on character assessment.
