Geoscience Attrition…

Seeing some of the best people in Geoscience resign this week. Handwriting on the wall….sad…sad.

Not only Senior Principals, but TTLs, Advisors, Principals and of course Chief Geoscientists, which represent together the “technical management”, belong exclusively to the ranks of the “high-potential”, aka “leadership material”, aka sponsored people - EM’s “aristocracy”.
As such, they are all, just like the “classic” management, de facto exempt from the PIP. Sure, as a Senior Principal (especially if you’re not that young) you may not be very well ranked because you’re competing with young super high-flying managers on their way to Dallas. However, the worst thing that can happen to you in “technical management” is to be ordered to retire if needed (as it happened in February 2021), of course with their extra million+ in the secret supplemental pension and their ample RSUs. The younger ones that we have today (non-RE) are bulletproof, like all management.

It is an interesting dynamic with geoscience headcount. Most of the Senior Principal Geoscientists are not near retirement eligible so do you move them back to the table at that CL and pay or start using them as cannon fodder to protect management against the PIP. Or just reduce geos and lean on India and the Senior Principals.

I would have to agree with the previous post; we still have too many geoscientists relative to the current workload or anything in the pipeline (which is nil). Another key indicator is the amount of Senior Principals: the ratio of these folks to individual groups is approaching an unhealthy amount.

Unfortunately, Geoscience is still overstaffed after all the layoffs, retirements and attrition…

Hey , to the poster who used the “colored fella” phrase, could you kindly k-ll yourself? No one will notice you are gone and that world will be a better place. TIA!

Re MGC: management in EM does not require any expertise or qualifications other than being in an EM management. As simple as that.

MGC is true former Exploration SVP

Seems like lots of geoscience and commercial attrition right now.

Part of the plan.

What's MGC please?

Why is MGC leading ExxonMobil’s Climate Change Strategy? I would have expected that kind role requires some qualifications/expertise.
