Thread regarding ExxonMobil Corp. layoffs

I quit

Been hinting to supervisors that they put me in the wrong role. Had 3 supervisors in 2 years and no meaningful career discussions. While I do ok, I hated the job. They seem to think people are cogs in the wheel. No one listen and so I finally resigned. It’s not worth the stress and aggravation. I asked to speak to HR for an exit interview. They sent me a survey and didn’t bother to reach out.

Wow, this company is absolutely dysfunctional.

In 2020, 50% of HR was laid off. Last year, their attrition was 55%. My department has had 2 successive HR Advisors quit in the last 6 months and we don't even know who our new Advisor is. Don't feel bad - there's no one left in HR to give you a face-to-face exit interview.

AMF (Adios My Friend). Go ahead and quit now. Your attrition will help the rest of us get better treatment (eventually). XOM is slow but it does tend to get market competitive over time, especially during recessions. It is way more fun talking about RSU and salary increase and benefit bearing bonus and hybrid workplace when everyone one else (especially in tech) is being laid off during a recession or a market bust. XOM is slow and deliberate in its changes and hence misses the business cycle. It will be improving salries and workplace conditions during a recession. Then they will announce the changes and point out why you should be glad you stayed. Plus the competitive salary offers must be considered over the full business cycle (stock grants value in up and down market over several years). Tech stock grants are under water now and in tech more of total compensation is equity based. XOM gives less equity to lower salary and CL people because it does not want them to suffer the bo-m/bust cycle. XOM beleives the higher CLs are older and have accumulated more assets and can tolerate the bo-m/bust. People under 35 have not gone thru a stock market crash (last occurred in 2008 and before that in 2001).

I left oil and gas and didn't go to big tech or finance. Got me a raise. Nothing too crazy, but still a raise. And the work load is ok, nothing crazy. He-l sometimes it's pretty lax.

@2sng I agree 100%.

It’s also a fact that no other industry besides O&G will pay you so much to do so little.

Don’t expect a sizable pay increase unless you’re going into tech, finance, or have a specialized skill set that nobody can live without. Very few people fall into the last category.

There's actually more out there than just big tech and O&G. Way more.

Congratulations for being proactive on whether or not you will be a good cultural fit going forward. Many of us have reached the same conclusion. We won't be a good fit, but, the Company hasn't really defined what is. Comoany is lost and adrift. All we have for the moment is the bean counters can count and stash the hoards of cash while it's still rolling in.

I started at a McDonald in HS, then bartended at a chain restaurant through college.
Recruited to EM with enthusiasm on both of our parts a few years ago.
Sadly, I miss the old days.
My appleby manager gave me an urn when my dog died.

@OP They don’t care. They’re probably glad you’re going, and you’re probably nowhere near as important or talented as you think you are.

No, you’re not getting a 50% pay bump either. The tech sector froze hiring and salary curves in O&G have been flat for years.

Good for you for taking your power back. Find another job; then, NEVER stop looking for next one. You've got the power, now keep it.

Happy trails!

Biden’s WH staff has been bailing too. You could look for a job there if you are ok with a 2.5 year assignment in DC.

Even those in the top 10% are just a number. I was ranked OWD before I left and I just got a survey link and no proper exit interview.

Everyone outside of the top 10% is just a number. That's the system.

Sad. Sorry. Best of luck. We can certainly do better than that.
