In the past 3 years most of mgr I saw are wrappers. Without real invention engineers starting wrapping other good project and make it a -X version. Gradually every single first line mgr have their own -X project based on the original good project. Engineers forced to learn these wrapped projects to reach same goal ! Its a lose-lost situation

In twelve years I’ve had way more good managers than bad. I’d go further and say I’ve only had two managers that I considered bad enough to look at moving job.
It probably depends on where you are in Cisco. Some areas seem to attract bad managers but, for the most part, the managers I’ve had didn’t plan on becoming managers and they are/were trying the best that they can.
Of course you could turn this around, do managers become bad because they’ve got useless staff? Do we get the managers that we deserve?
During my time at Cisco I had lots of mangers that always fell into one of four categories.
- Name Dropper
- Heckler
- Melodramatic Cheerleader
- Peer (basically another individual contributor that I reported to. Best mgr I had).
Neither, I only get 30 mins once a month. Once we get past the weather, holiday stories, it’s “Gotta rush for next meeting - bye!” Never had a career chat - ever. I would have to go back 7 years to find a career chat with a manager.
I don’t think I’ve had a manager long enough to find out. 😆
Let's be honest, to be a good manager, you have to have a deep understanding of the organization's strategy in order to lead the people in your team.
Since the ELT doesn't have any idea what Cisco's strategy actually is, how do you expect first-line managers to understand it?
Me manage much talke
My manager he no listen. He only talk talk talk. Sometime he talk for say nothing useful! One day he said RTP closing! Confirmed!
It’s a general problem in corporate America, but lack of listening is surely a problem among leadership and sales.
CX, a key listening function is not even remotely trying to process any real feedback from customers.
Neither. But he is an azz'ole.
Mine is an exploiter and delegator. Delegates the work and never issues any stock or raises.
