Thread regarding IBM layoffs

I wish something would come out of at least one investigation

How many media exposes and investigations did we have so far regarding age discrimination at IBM? Each of them determines that, yes, IBM is discriminating based on age but that's where the things end. Nothing ever comes of it. No consequences, no change in behavior, nothing. It's disheartening, to say the least.

COBOL pays well because you need to know your sh!t for those jobs.
PowerShell is more for level 1 help desk techs with super low pay.
If based on skills the PS schnook would get the axe first no doubt.

I can agree with you on that limited point. But just because I'm sure some people have let their skills atrophy, that does NOT mean it describes the totality of what was going on with the RAs. It can always be more than one thing.

And just a point of order, COBOL programmers are in demand. The government, banks, etc. have untold millions of lines of COBOL code still running transactions at Soc Security, IRS, almost every ATM transaction, etc. And kids aren't learning it in college. Those sectors are both huge for IBM.

Not age discrimination. Skills discrimination. If you brag about your "skills", but they are 10 years old... buhbye. Ripe for RA. Blows me away how many think they are skilled, yet can't do anything. Confusing skills with experience, not the same.
You got 30yrs COBOL, but can't run a PowerShell cmd to save your life? Great. RA time.

It’s because IBM quietly settles out of court or right before an investigation gains traction. They require a signed non-disclosure agreement be in place when they cut the check so you’ll never hear about all of the (and there are many) out comes. I know ‘cause they settled with me.
