Has anyone ultimately been turned down for a new role following salary negotiations where you asked for “too much”? Worst case is you accept less than you hoped for, right or wrong? Or did it backfire?

You won't get the offer rescinded for asking for more, provided you do so politely, but ultimately you can either accept, decline the offer or not respond in the amount of time given (which ends in decline).
As long as you are polite you are OK.
I know someone who interviewed for a higher band. The hiring manager really wanted her because of her experience. He even went to HR but wasn't able to get approval to hire her due to salary. She was willing to take a pay cut but not at the drastic level they offered.
