Thread regarding ExxonMobil Corp. layoffs

I nearly warned somebody against joining XOM yesterday

A friend's son was excited to tell me he got an offer. He's a good guy and he doesn't have a deceitful bone in his body. He's going to be eaten alive here. Still, XOM is a good company for those who are just starting (good pay, good experience) so I kept my mouth shut. But I feel so bad for the kid. I can't believe things have changed so much that instead of recommending the company to everybody in hearing range I'm now considering telling people to stay away.

Back when I started I was promised a career.

Seems like broken promises to my generation.

I was not warned that I would be cast aside half way through my career because some Exec perceived a savings by moving my job to India.

I agree that there are two classes of employees at EM.

With Sponsor and Without Sponsor.

In these comments, it is clear which comments are made by members of each group.

Sponsored employees deny anything is wrong and tell the Without Sponsors to just leave if unhappy.

With Sponsors feel like they have a career.

Without Sponsors feel like they are on 1 year contract and just 1 bad supervisor or 1 blamed incident away from PIP.

EM has become measurably segregated.

A career is a relationship, not a transaction. You need to remember that everyone in ExxonMobil was told when they were hired that they had a career, not a transactional
contract job.

Are you saying that management lied about having a "career" and they should have told everyone that we just have a one-year "transactional" job that is subject to termination for any number of "cultural" reasons?

Why? Just because you’re miserable doesn’t mean they will be.

Here’s what you old timers don’t understand: a job is a transaction, not a relationship. Most of you are miserable because you can’t (or won’t) accept this. Younger people take a job knowing what they want from it and they’re smart enough to move on once they get it. In other words, they treat it like a transaction.

Knowing when to move on…..

When you start hating your job, company, and management, do everyone (especially yourself) a favor: resign.

My daughter graduated with a Ch E degree this spring and I advised her to not even apply. This company is toxic and leadership has no problem outright lying with a straight face.

This happened to me as well. He asked and I couldn’t resist telling him what my experience was. I told him if he wanted to accept the offer, do it with a clear head and never let them fool you. I told him to take advantage of the matching & save as much money as he can. Use the benefits like insurance to get new glasses, braces for his kids, etc. Take any and all useful, expensive training you can. Basically, I told him to suck the company dry, build his resume, and leave for a better job after a few years.

I made both aware what is going on inside the company.
Told them to just accept an offer if they don’t have any other option.

This is a totally different place to work for the two classes of employees:

  1. With Sponsor
  2. Without Sponsor

Different opportunities. Different pay. Different treatment. Different accountability.

I wish someone warned me instead of me relaying on what i read on glassdoor years when i was given an EM offer. What i see now vs what i read was totally different.

I will definitely think twice about joining if someone warned me.

It's a new world, Company is trying to reinvent its culture, but, it's a solid business for a long time to come. It will be good to get young blood not tainted by the old culture. They can help with he reinventing. I would just recommend it it to anyone who is truly interested in a real hands on oil and gas job with the long hours, occasional missed family events etc. Anyone looking for an 8-5 corporate d bag job should look elsewhere

Lol, just tell him to stay away, or at least let him know he needs to use this as a springboard to a different company. I hear EM is a liability on the resume though, so probably better he goes somewhere else.
