The management here often tries to make talented employees look incapable. Why do they do it? Is it in their interest to get the best out of their employees? I don't think it is.

I think it happens more than you think and also happens among peers. I know people who gave out bad peer reviews just to inflate a perceived view of their own value.
When it comes to layoffs, many people don't care who they have to put down to keep their own job and it happens between manager and subordinate and among peers.
My supervisor couldn’t possibly do that because he is clueless about the business unit’s function. He has no idea of the day-to-day duties or tasks that the technicians perform. His main job function is to make sure there are resources available to get the orders completed. He doesn’t need to know the job, but it would help him be more efficient if he did. The resources would be easier managed if he had a modicum of insight into the technicians duties. Although, it’s not necessary for him to know.
They definitely like to control information distribution so the higher ups can look smart.
Because they are narcissistic young sn-t noses that think they are better than you, even though they have never done the job. They think the more incapable you look, the better they look. They tend to get exposed soon after the experienced people leave, and their incompetence becomes apparent. Especially when their manager, whose a$% they kissed, also leaves and doesn't take them along.
my bosses when I was at att did that 24/7 one of the reasons I left.
att management is dysfunctional at best.
I don't buy it.
T definitely had plenty of bad things when I worked there. But I can honestly say I never had a manager do that. I’d say it is the exception. I do know a few folks still there that had that situation but not many.
Broad statement - likely isolated incidents where there is a personal conflict between employee and manger.
