PC/server is maybe 10-20% of leading edge volume. Of course they’re going after that even if it’s small.

Intel could maybe compete in non-leading edge, but then you’d have to take a very large margin hit. The usual business model won’t work.

@pdw+1hmRkquW if PC and server market is small then why is TSMC going after that ?

There is all chance Intel and GF can compete well with tsmc.
After all the water manufacturing machines are from ASML and other vendors in Tsmc, intel and gf...

Intel lost the technology lead a long time ago.

There’s zero chance they can achieve the scale of TSMC since there aren’t enough wafers to make it economically viable. The PC/server market is way too small vs mobile chips which are dominated by TSMC and TSMC is going after PC and server as well.

These Google and other folks first use foreign technology for low cost. Then they empower them to zenith and call them to come establish domestically. While domestic talent prevalent in abundance is left to do nothing.. haha

Love how Intel is now grouped together with GF in the "old tech, commodity manufacturing" foundries:

"In addition to President Joe Biden’s proposed $52 billion investment plan -- which is still under consideration by US legislators -- the US should lean into its strengths of research and development, manufacturing less-advanced but more widely used slower chips through the likes of Intel Corp. and GlobalFoundries Inc., and redouble its efforts to bring TSMC and Samsung on shore."
