Every new passenger car sold in the world will be electric by 2040, says Exxon Mobil CEO Darren Woods

Even Exxon Mobil thinks electric vehicles are the future.

The oil giant is predicting that by 2040, every new passenger car sold in the world will be electric, CEO Darren Woods told CNBC’s David Faber in an interview. In 2021, just 9% of all passenger car sales were electric vehicles, including plug-in hybrids, according to market research company Canalys. That number is up 109% from 2020 says Canalys.

In light of its modeling, Woods said Exxon Mobil is evaluating how the decline in gasoline sales could impact its business. Exxon Mobil is one of the largest publicly traded international gas companies and a leader in the industry. Its website boasts that it is the largest “refiner and marketer of petroleum products,” as well as a chemicals company.

Woods, who spent a part of his career on the chemical side of the company’s operations, says chemicals will be key to keeping the company profitable during the clean energy transition. The plastics that Exxon Mobil produces can be used in the manufacturing of electric vehicles.

ExxonMobil’s calculations predicted that oil demand in 2040 would be equivalent to what the world needed in 2013 or 2014. Woods explained to CNBC that the company was still profitable at that time.

Woods seemed unfazed by the prediction, saying “that change will not make or break this business or this industry quite frankly.”

There is not enough electricity to support such a quick transition to EVs.

There is not an adequate grid to distribute enough electricity to support that quick of a transition to EVs.

At some point, the increase in EVs will lower the demand on gas. Gas becomes much cheaper as Electricity demand increases electricity costs.

Gas cars will become cheaper to operate than electric at that point. Demand for gas cars will increase.

Transition to electric is not a logical economic trend and will only happen through tariffs on gas, incentivized electric cars, laws against gas cars, and government funded electricity infrastructure upgrades.

This is not quite what he said. He did not say every car in the world will be EV by 2040

He said "we ran a scenario where every car is electric in 2040, and we still found out oil demand will stay at 2013 levels"

Yeah, yeah, the Arab Embargo was going to keep oil prices high forever. 1984-5 came along. Then they rose, then they fell, then they rose, then they fell.
Peak Oil has come and gone several times.
Electric cars have been attempted many times in our past. There’s going to be issues getting them to pull cattle trailers, 5th wheels, climate control in harsh weather, non-renewable battery requirements. And on.
18 years from now, Dodge will still have its Cummins, Chevy it’s Duramax, Ford might revert to the 7.3 Turbo.
History does repeat itself.

I definitely recall him saying the complete opposite several years ago when queried on this topic.

Apart from that, incredibly insightful of our 'leader' to make such a prediction for the direction of travel. His acumen is incredible.

I watched that 'documentary' describing the future in the words of our EM leaders.
Pretty clear all of them have been on a heavy daily Lithium dose for a few years.
Chemicals lead, in particular, had pinpoint pupils as she schooled us. Roofies, too?

This is in direct conflict with the EV goals they claim to profess.
These folks are ingesting a couple of batteries a day!
Cobain never did that.

Maybe 50 mpg in my Humm-V back in the day, or today?
