1 Gazillion Dollars would make me happy, as long as we’re just being childish. Right, OP?

Anything less than $500k per year in California is for suckers. Texans can live on 3 pesos a year as long as you submit to the Bible. I get paid in bullets.

A guaranteed income stream of $50k per year and good insurance is a nice retirement.

If I had that today, I'd be outta here. As it is, the sticking point is the healthcare, since that's nearly as much as the income on the open market!

Given the pension and SS and a paid off house, I think $500,000 is plenty. Any more than that and you just buying junk you don’t need.

$15 or $20 million would be good enough for me.

To retire comfortably having 5 million total in the bank/ stocks/ pension would be enough for very comfortable life [25 plus years], say from age 60. In general a good yearly stream of $250,000 should be good enough to have a very comfortable life outside California or NYC, for those places you need to double it.

$500 million. Enough for a decent Bay Area house, jet, crew, and a couple toys.
