Thread regarding ExxonMobil Corp. layoffs

Hunger Games are now becoming Cannibal Games

As everybody likely knows, the CL28-29 ranking group includes a bunch of sponsored important people - team leads, advisors, principals, young supervisors and managers, who of course have to be highly ranked, to keep moving up and pleasing their high sponsors.
In the past, this was achieved by padding the bottom of this ranking group with older technical workers and even old supervisors, who would take it because a nice retirement was around the corner.
Today the problem is that almost all REs are gone, either truly retired or forced to retire through PIP. Older supervisors and Senior Principals are gone, pushed out in Feb 2021. June 1 has seen a large number of RE retiring, painfully just before their ranking meeting!
It has become now dramatically difficult to pad the bottom of this ranking group, leading to ranking cannibalism. Somebody among the sponsored has to be at the bottom!
Note the recent quitting of two young supervisors, one of them a rising star in Guyana Development. This is getting interesting.

I resigned as of May 27, 2022. My former supervisor contacted me 2 days before leaving directing me to complete the performance assessment form. Of course he said that I needed to be included in the PA since I was an employee on Mar 31, 2022. I am sure that this was a strategy to ensure that he had me to put in NSI. I hope that his strategy saved some poor, outstanding soul for at least one year. What a way to do performance assessments. Leaving this prison was one of the best decisions I have made.

It was obvious to all (except the execs) that this was going to happen. I resigned as a CL28 last year after +12 years with the company when I saw my ranking drop from E to VG in 2021 and I wasn't being given any "high-impact" initiatives to work on. This system was set up to get worse before it got better.

But remember: XOM is the most meritocratic company in the world guys!

Just curious what those LCS people could put on their ODS’s as their “impacts”.

Ranking now judged on impacts so your team achieve zero then bo-m, all NSI.

Jest a minor correction, OP.
While they do consume the brains of others, making them somewhat 'cannibals', the appropriate term would be 'zombies'.
That was prerequisite to obtain these positions - they are 'risen.'

Now as far as zombies feasting on each other - I'm not sure that is actually cannibalism in the original sense.
I'd defer to senatuhs kennedy or cruz, or maybe uncle clarence, for clarification on that.

You’re right, soon we’ll see young managers ranked in the same super-sized group against new hires. Nothing is too absurd or too pathetic to sustain EM’s corrupt system. And then you see postings pretending that it’s like that in all the companies. Nope, only in those that are about to run into the ground.

I am so fing sick of our asinine ranking system. It had always been a deeply flawed process that disincentivizes collaboration and encourages back stabbing. It’s amusing now that we have cut staff down to the bone, the chosen ones are worried. If only my previous supervisors who were especially brutal were still around to feel that pain first hand.

The show is getting real! In SG, the smart ones are leaving too. Amazing how in front of us, they sing praises and behind the scenes are sending resumes out!

Their actions speak for themselves. While I am safe, I do not plan to stick around for too long too!

Truly lovin' this thread, including replies...
Can't wait to see these spineless sharks and snakes bite each other. I'll be watching for infested NI material just looking for some pus spilling out their bodies. Cool!

If the HiPos are judged on their impact, and many “Chosen Ones” were placed on CCS, they should be in trouble because they did not achieve ANYTHING.

All should be NSI based on actual achievement, or lack of any achievements.

It’s not about the percentage in NSI, it’s about the percentage who hear they’re dropping a category or 2 even though they worked their butts off all year but didn’t have time for or weren’t given the opportunity for a “step-out” highlight. So morale falls, people feel unwanted and leave, creating a greater vacuum for next years ranking to fill. And so it goes, and so it goes.

I once had a boss who extolled the virtues of the “complacent bottom third”-that fraction of the rank list that empowered the chosen few to continue to protect their devoted sycophants with rankings that most of them truly didn’t deserve. The Mensa members that devised the new assessment system were so arrogant that they could not do the simple math to understand that whacking 15-21% of the bottom in just 3 years would leave them no alternative but to drop “chosen ones” into the NI abyss. Sad thing is that enough of the top ranked people left that only the mediocre managers are left, nobody with any courage of conviction or initiative to change.
I don’t care what the stock price is now, it went up in spite of leadership not because of anything they did. The future is bleak, and getting bleaker by the day.

You knew this was eventually going to happen, and I couldn’t be happier to see it this year. Though next year don’t be surprised if they combine CL26 - CL29 to protect the chosen ones.

Good post. It's true that many REs left just before ranking time. Any NRE is automatically thrown under the bus and anyone in Good last year desperately hanging on will now take a slot in the bottom bucket. However, to hit 5-8% actually out the door, some of the people who thought they were "safe" from such lowly games are now going to get nailed without a proper explanation. Contractors are being rehired in droves now to do the real work the hipo spanky babies are incapable of doing. Seen it before, just like the snake eating it's own tail.

There are some unsponsored young people in CL28 and they might promote more to this CL for this specific purpose. The problem is that if you put somebody with 10-13 years with the company in NI, even if the intention is not to get rid of them - at least not right now - they figure out their career is in the fritz and they just quit, so back to square one.
