Thread regarding AT&T layoffs

I'm tired of being taken advantage of just because I'm young

I'm always expected to stay longer, always expected to change my plans because I don't have a family and everybody around me does. Well, frankly, I don't give a damn that I have no major responsibilities outside of work. I have a life I live and enjoy living right now. Me wanting to go to the movies with my friends is important to me, thank you very much. You decided to get married and have kids. I shouldn't have to be the one to suffer the consequences of your decision. /rant

No sympathy here but nice post — you gave the old timers a chance to vent and feel good.

Quit and go see a movie.

Didn't turn out the way OP thought.
Folks who were hired before you were born really don't care what you think.
Put in some time.

Most of us put in the time until our skills were at a place we could confidently put our foot down. Also no one needs to know your personal life. Saying I have a prior commitment is enough.

You know what's really not fair?
I, with 39 years get the same amount of vacation the newbies with 25 years get.
And, the rookies at 5 years get the same pay as I do.
Go cry elsewhere youngster.

I know it sucks and there's really no buts. It was the same when I went into the Air Force I was always the one on call I was the one to work the weeks when people with families wanted to off, but I stuck with it and when I was in charge I made sure it happened last to those Junior to me.

T should start giving out partipation trophies to the younger generation of employees. They are not used to the fact that awards at companies are earned by performance. It's actually very comical!

What is this rant about? How is T harming you? In what way? Really dude? Really????

This younger generation is very misguided. If they think anyone at the company or anywhere else really cares about their complaints, they have already lost. The idea that any company will let employees make the rules and really have input is a farce. It’s about money and that’s what drives all of it. Look no further than facebooks announcement this weekend. The revenue is down and now the employees will feel the pinch.
For younger employees, you will see automation and lower paid employees from other countries take your jobs.
If I were a young employee, I would work my a$$ off and make no waves.

If your young and having a good time, don't worry, you soon probably will have a kid and then you'll have more benefits than anyone. Except the Stank.

You'll get your more vacation faster and it will basically be unlimited because all you have to do is call it "paid caregiver" and they can't stop you from taking days off every week for whatever reason you might want. Doctor appointments, kid puked on the rug, have to research kindergarten, just make it up. I've seen people doing these things ever week ever since they put this new policy in when they took away vacation from older people.

Santone hates old people so use this to your advantage.

I'm old and don't have kids. Never had them. And even I have no sympathy for you.

You still get more benefits than I got at that stage of my career.

Look, those older guys are all tied to their pensions and can't go anywhere else. Leave the work undone, and they will do it after a brief period of freaking out. If AT&T goes bankrupt tomorrow, you lose nothing. Those guys lose about half their pension when it rolls to the PBGC.

Don't let them push you around when you have the upper hand.

@suck it up…There is no such thing as “putting in your time” anymore! Old farts don’t get a pass on working. Just retire already .

Look for something else. I think AT&T has the oldest employees around and all have old archaic ideas. Get a job with a company in this century with younger people.

In the groups I worked in, there was "overtime equalization" where a tally of forced overtime was kept, and people with the lowest hours worked were forced, and seniority was used as a tiebreaker. Depending on the unit, it was all overtime, or forced overtime.

But never did I see it be least senior employee forced all the time. They tried that with me once, and a 25 year employee who knew the arrangements squashed it real quickly.

@OP, You can see by the comments there's not much compassion for your situation. I would recommend you look to your future and start maxing out your 401k and create financial independence so in 25-35 years work will be optional.

Boohoo! They gave you more vacation time than we got, higher starting salaries than we got, all kinds of extra benefits. Company catered to get young people to join and they either complain or still don't want a job here.

Feel nothing for you.

Then why are you still here? This is a job seekers market right now. If you are such a valuable asset you can do much better than this place. AT&T is a bloated bureaucracy stuck in a 1970's mentality trying to compete with modern dynamic businesses.
