Ego is the Enemy of Good Leadership

I resigned from XOM a few months ago of my own accord. (Not NSI or PIP). It was simply the right time to take the pension and frankly I did not like what I saw in terms of leadership behavior and the type of people who were put into positions of power. The toxicity and the politics were so bad that I had to leave before it further corrupts me.

The following excerpt from HBR pretty much sums up the corrosive nature of unchecked egos.

"The inflated ego that comes with success – the bigger salary, the nicer office, the easy laughs – often makes us feel as if we’ve found the eternal answer to being a leader. But the reality is, we haven’t. An inflated ego makes us susceptible to manipulation; it narrows our field of vision; and it corrupts our behavior, often causing us to act against our values. Breaking free of an overly-protective or inflated ego and avoiding the leadership bubble is an important and challenging job that requires selflessness, reflection, and courage."

Walking away for reasons such as career growth, ethics, mental health, preserve dignity, or to make room for someone else (so they don’t get pip) is the right thing to do.

Sitting in a job but not contributing or because there is no work is simply greed.

Yet you touted your high standing to make sure everyone knew how great you were. LOL. Look to yourself to change your life rather than focusing on others' personalities as potentially 'rubbing off on you'. Look in the mirror if you want to improve yourself. Walking off a job site when you're already wealthy isn't going to build any character.

A small amount of ego is called ambition and self-confidence, which is a good thing.

The Ego gets in the middle of the real you and enlightenment. The Ego is built out of your experiences (an illusion).
