“Good” supervisor and frequency

Curious to know what is chance of getting a “good” supervisor and frequency of supervisor change? “Good” means supportive/fair and knowledgeable.

My experience -
2 out of 10 are “good”.
Had 10 supervisors in last 8 years.

Is this typical?

Supervisors reach that level not because of their people skills or leadership skills, but based on PowerPoint skills.

The fact that any Supervisor has very good people skills is just by random chance.

EM needs to promote people with leadership and people skills and then give Presentation training if required, not the other way around.

In 38 years in upstream, I had 28 direct supervisors. Only one was truly awful (but brilliant) and she became a VP in Chemicals. Of the remaining 27, 1 became CEO, 1 became Pres of production, 7 became VP or EVP. Most of rest were solidly in the middle and became lower level executives. 5 of these 28 were women, which is pretty good if you consider less than 10% of engineering grads were women when I hired on. .All of the my female supv were much younger than me and moved up rapidly (I have no complaints about my female supervisors other than one mentioned above. ) All but 3 made it retirement. of the 3 who resigned, one became a VP in BP, 2 others got rich as independent producers.

In my 8 years at XOM, I have had 5 supervisors and 4 of them were pretty good but one of them was my supervisor for 5 years (he was moved and I was moved later into his new group). He made my life a living he-l and is by far the worst supervisor I have had in my 30 year career.

I have had 16 supervisors in 16 years- either I was loving or they were every year. 6 of them were awesome, 4 were “ok” / tolerable, 6 were awful. One I kinda had a crush on Ahahahha… My current supervisor is a total di-k and I loathe him. I try to remember that they won’t be around long before someone new comes along.

Good Supervisors are very rare with n EM.

The EM typical supervisor is a young stupid id--t with zero interpersonal skills that must have impressed some manager with PowerPoint skills such that the Manager somehow concluded she would be a good supervisor.

Skill at PowerPoint is unrelated to supervisor skills and EM management needs to realize this. Stop giving these stupid children supervisors and destroying every ounce of loyalty that your competent employees still have in EM.

I have had zero good supervision at excon Mobil in my time here. They have all been figurehead just doing the dirty work dictated by the upper management. Whether I did a good job was irrelevant it was all perception. It was all My time at the middle or bottom. So no there Is no such thing as a good supervisor at ExxonMobil.

In general people don’t love their job or boss anywhere. That is why it called a job not fun and why they are called your boss not your friend. This isn’t just an ExxonMobil thing. Good luck in your quest to find greener pastures.

It is pretty subjective 'good' as another poster says.
But it is also pretty 'objective' when EM comes to select their supervisors.
'Goodness' is not on the list of qualities, at least from a moral standpoint.

In my last 10 years I had different supervisors. It was ridiculous.

There is too much variability in the data to provide a “good” answer to this question. Also different people value different things. Good to me might not be good to you. I will add that complaining about your supervisor is a universal pastime even outside of ExxonMobil.
