Are you on a toxic team? I am about to quit as my mgr is a passive agressive clown with no real tech bacground and no mentorship skills at all. The rest of the team licks boots - everyone lines up and follow this clown. People are funny and sad at the same time, no spine, what can I tell you...

I recently left IBM from the ecosystem side of the house. The too many managers and execs comments is spot on. There was insane attrition at band 8, 9 and 10 levels since the start of the year. But no backfills. However, Ds and above rarely leave. And they do not do the hands on work obviously. Only want to review and opine on calls. On a deck review call for a GM update, I had 2 VPs and 3 Band Ds telling me what to do. And everyone asking for when the changes will be done later on over slack. That one example. really got me. (I was a band 10 btw). And I realized my output, or outcome was rarely a business objective but rather how many execs I was able to align. Other companies during the interview asked, how many initiatives did you launch, how many programs did you complete? And back of mind I used to think, I got 3 VPs to agree on something I guess at IBM.

You summarized it well. I am also struggling :-(. I bring up ideas and I am turned down and scolded that I am too proactive. This is so frustrating. I really do not know what happened to people and humanity...or is it just the company culture and the new normal?

Yes, IBM also needs to get rid of local matrix management structures unless your functional manager is also a local matrix manager. There is absolutely no point having them when they don't know what employees are doing. They don't even manage any local employee relationship engagements. I've never seen such duplicate management layers outside IBM.

Layoff 50% of managers and executives. They usually have no direct reports, less than 10 direct reports, or only have local matrix reports. Easy to identify them. More advanced method, layoff managers and executives whoes team showed less than expected results in 1H2022 but IBM has no metrics to track managements' performance.

IBM has two competing issues right now.

  1. The CEO has committed to high single digit revenue growth for the rest of 2022. THAT is a stake in the ground saying the new strategy is working. NOTE its revenue growth.
  1. The CFO brought up on the 2nd q earnings call the unexpected financial headwinds. Interest and currency being the primaries, BUT Russia, employee pay, Kyndryl wrap, mainframe acceleration and Watson health revenue loss being the secondary. These headwinds will impact FCF and the CFO reset expectations accordingly. IBM can’t take a second bite at FCF, so costs will have to come down to address the headwinds if they persist. This is the red flag warning.

NOTE number 1 is 180 degrees out of phase with number 2. What both exec’s are saying is they intend to grow revenue while shrinking costs. Looks great on paper, but does anyone think IBM can execute it? If they do execute it, it means IBM is going to have to make some very very hard choices. Some low margin, and high employee content products / services will have to go or be partnered

My team is also super toxic, tons of people have quit. Some even without a job lined up. Micromanagement and absolute disregard to what people have to say; it’s my way or the highway mentality. Many chose the highway. It’s not just one manager, but a management chain that made it clear: employees’ views and suggestions are worth nothing.

Just sell RH and jump on any new bandwagon hype.
It cannot be any worse than where we are at now.

IBM’s biggest problem even today, can be summed up by his book title “who says elephants can’t dance” Gerstner took over a dysfunctional managed IBM and finally got the management team to focus on the common good (saving IBM). How did he do that? He eliminated the silo management culture (all for me and none for thee) engrained within IBM by laying out common goals and enforcing them ruthlessly. If you didn’t adapt, you were gone. 1/2 of all the managers from his time being CEO were shown the door. AK and the CFO can financially engineer all they want, but they will never accomplish the new Redhat purchased strategy until the current management team gets on board and quits embracing the silo management style. AK it’s time to get ruthless because your current management team is not adapting near fast enough to the new Redhat strategy. We have just wrapped on 3 years, and results while good, are not coming at near the speed you need to save the company. Time is now turning against you.

My last manager was an outside hire, seemed like a good person for the first six months. And then... I don't know. Something flipped, and instead of laughing along with us at the latest piece of nonsensical corporate bureaucracy or kneejerk "strategy" change, he became a corporate dummy blindly backing whatever d-mb project was proposed by the VPs. And within a year everybody on his team had left, including some he had hired himself. I don't recognize anybody on that team any longer.

I had a manager like that who had no clue what he was doing and he was downright offensive. Also a micro-manager too. I could not run any faster to move to another team.
