Stuck in Permian

Is it true that if you accept a job in the Permian it is hard to leave because it is so hard to staff? I don’t want to slow down my career advancement by being stuck in a job too long for no reason other than there isn’t anyone to replace me.

Premium was 20% before COVID. It was dropped to ZERO during COVID and was then brought back at 10%. Everything costs more in Permian. You will have more money and higher standard of living in Houston. The premium isn’t high enough.

Any hard to fill jobs will be filled by BTC. While Midland maybe a *hithouse, it’s a step up from India.

There is a 10% premium, which was 20% before the pandemic. 20% is just enough to wash out the most expensive place in Texas. Labor, insurance, groceries, housing, etc are more expensive than Houston, Dallas or Austin!

@nhg comment sounded like his colleague received a salary increase and not a premium. He did use the word "the" raise. I have not of a premium to go there. That would make it at least tolerable Can anyone confirm?

@nhg Is there really a 20% premium for taking a midland role or was this guy a one off? A premium would make dealing with the desert more tolerable for sure.

XTO and the Permian are a different tribe than ExxonMobil. If you adapt to the XTO ways you’ll get scrapped once you move back to Houston. You think you’re getting your ticket punched but you need to demonstrate Exxon loyalty the whole time.

I can't think of a worse assignment in the Company. The domestic relo policy had always svcked and now it's worse. The place is a sh1th0le. I think you are there to either get you Permian ticket punched as you move up the ladder and get out quickly or you are ditched there with hopes you will resign and do a little work in the process.

Myself and a few others quit XOM because there wasn’t a clear line of sight to get out of permian. It’s hard to staff, and they won’t let you move onto the next role so easily without finding a backfill before you leave. Usually you’re gonna stay 3-4 years. However once you do 3-4 years you have a good justification to get moved to something else, but most people I know got the short end of the stick on the next role leaving Permian. It seems like all the positions in HQ are getting back filled by somebody in India instead of backfilling that attrition in the US.

It is weird that this comments and post stay a long time knowing how the website called “The Layoff.com” is too protective when people write a comment against Midland or Permian. Yes, if you do not move quickly to stay or avoid Midland, you will be there minimum four years. Much of the time the supervisor is the one who decides who move out from Permian.

Hahaha I know the guy you are talking about. Let’s just say that group is heavy in politics. That guy is strong enough to pull a guy along with him who does nothing. UNCON is really full of politics. It’s a mix of EM wanna B’s and XTO wanna B’s. The rest of us are just peasants trying to live the American dream. Back to the question. If your in the loop you can leave. If you are a real worker your not going anywhere.

One thing to consider - the stuff you pull out of Permian is pre-Jurassic, like barely post-Big Bang.
So - yeah - you are stuck there for a while.

I know of one who got the 20 percent raise at midland. Worked for one year and then pulled a medical necessity move back to Houston. He is a real sl------l. He has constantly moved around and been promoted. I think he has some dirt on someone high up. Yes it is hard to move back once you leave. I know of one engineer who will be there for at least 4 years. Several people left the company rather than be transfered to a remote site such as midland, whyoming or south america. Remember if you turn down a move it is a bad mark on your career.

Stupid question. A location does not affect your career advancement in EM. Your career advancement is predetermined by your potential.
In other words, if you are going places nobody will forget you nowhere. If you are not, what does it matter where you will be a cog?
