Thread regarding ExxonMobil Corp. layoffs

Never taking a sick day is not a badge of honor you think it is

It's not "a mark of your character" or something to aspire to. If you come to work sick you show complete disrespect for your coworkers. And no, this is not even about COVID. This is about a guy who bragged last week about not taking a sick day in 20 years even when he felt so bad he could barely stand. How did we get to the point where something like that is considered a positive thing?

Surprised nobody has pointed out that it’s also pretty inconsiderate to your coworkers to be spewing your germs around the office if you actually are sick. Sorry I am not impressed that you were holding in the runs during a budget meeting, you psychos.

@1sui Is he Indian? Every Indian boss I’ve ever had did that. I guess it’s a culture thing.

If they’re on vacation just block them. It’s always worked for me.

My manager takes vacation and logs in every 3 hours or so just to check that our Skype lights are green. He will even call occasionally and give us all busy work. Absolutely zero trust.

I knew someone who never called in sick and devoted her whole life to her EM job. She had a heart attack at work and died a few years short of retirement. Another person I worked with bragged about never taking sick days (although he’s leave early if he didn’t feel well). He retired and died 6 months later from cancer.

I vowed to never let myself become that devoted to EM. I’ve called in sick quite a few times over the years. Also, I’m retiring at 55 regardless of the financial implications. My health is far more important than this company.

@gzq I have a simple solution for that:

When I’m on PTO, I leave my work phone and computer off. It’s called paid time off, not paid time on. The operating term for paid time on is work.

If it’s so important that I need to be called during my PTO, maybe the dipsh^t manager can have a go at doing it himself. It’s not like the world will come to a sudden end if he has to put down Zoom for 15 minutes and do some actual work.

To be fair regarding working on vacation, sone choose to do it briefly on vacation days to mow down the avalanche of BS that fills their inbox daily. Makes coming back to work less stressful.

PS - I’ve heard sone European companies actually delete incoming emails when someone is on vacation, providing the sender a note informing them their email was destroyed and toco tact so-and-so if it’s really that urgent. Sounds like paradise.

When you get laid off or leave the job, you are going to wish you called in sick for as many days as possible. You can't cash out sick days.

Every normal person calls in sick at some point even when they are not sick because of emergencies that come up at the last minute - whether it is for family, friends or just needing a day off. That person that has never called in sick probably has no life. Or else he took a bunch of family leave or had a bunch of vacation days that does not require the use of sick days.

Personally, if I never took a sick day, I would not brag. I'll probably be more embarrassed than anything else.

Silly employees, you are encouraged to work on holiday and while on sick day, even while in hospital so that you don't realize the toxic environment that is making you sick.

This is not new. Saw it going on 30 years ago.

And there were awards for milestones.

The worst are the ones who take vacation and log-in to work anyway. To the people doing this: knock it off. It does nothing for your career and only serves to create the expectation that people will be available for work on vacation. This helps nobody.
