Thread regarding ExxonMobil Corp. layoffs

PIP should be renamed PIT

The EM long drawn out layoff system called PIP is like putting 100 dogs into a PIT and throwing them less food such that each cycle the stronger dogs ki-l and eat 5 weaker dogs.

This is a terrible existence even for the stronger dogs that thrive, because to thrive they must seek out weaker dogs and devise ways to ki-l them.

Eventually there are fewer and fewer outright weak dogs such that formerly strong dogs are now fair game to be eaten.

The strong dogs must become very cunning and deceitful to outsmart equally strong dogs, devising plans to make those other strong dogs appear weak.

The PIT system successfully achieves a reduced number of dogs, but zero dogs are happy, even the strong ones that eat fresh meat daily and get fat.

The PIT system destroys all loyalty and all pride.

The PIT system is a horrible way to treat employees.

My boss placed me at the top of the local rank list for my affiliate. She received a phone call instructing her to resubmit the list with me no higher that 8th from top.

No emails. No reference to my performance or anyone outperforming me, just outright instructing to move me downward.

I am not allowed to thrive in the PIT, even if top performer.

No rewrite required. The rules about keeping HiPos at top of rank list even if zero accomplished and even if made huge mistake costing EM millions, are not written.

None of the procedures about keeping HiPos at top of ranking will ever be written, but they are always followed.

Also the average of rankings per group is regularly manipulated. Some people think all groups must average 50, but groups like Safety target average less than 40 while Development Planning target average over 60.

No way they would put enough Dev Planners low enough to average 50.

Forced rankings for thee and not for them.

My rank group is quickly running out of tributes (over 50 technical ladder types).

I am sure they will rewrite the rules before a Sponsored HiPo drops too low.

Just say "Hunger Game", saving all the typing!

Forced ranking with political and racial manipulation is bad enough. Add 5% mandatory PIT annually plus 5% annual attrition and very productive non-sponsored employees get the PIT.

Sponsored/Chosen people ride high on the rigged ranking system and only need worry when their sponsor retires.

I have worked a other computer companies without forced ranking and without annual PIT, so can confirm these are not required for success and are detrimental to the company.

The forced ranking and annual PIT are outright choices made by DW and his minions. Every year that EM keeps these two systems shows the choice DW made. Basically DW chooses the cultural problems and high attrition and rejects all other valid options that would lead to a happier more productive workforce.

Thanks again DW.

I think an analogy involving non-living things, say apples in a trash bin, would be more appropriate for how the corporation regards its human resources.

Great analogy! I find it sad that our performance assessment system is a derivation of failed GE system. Even GR has abandoned it…

That’s why I took the PIL. There’s a pill for everything. Right?

OP - agree with the sentiment but not a nuance of the analogy. 'Strong dog' implies healthy dog but it's actually the most vicious dogs that survive. Translate to humans and its the most vicious, most morally bankrupt, deceitful - dare I say deplorable that survive (even thrive); and any truly strong ones that are left - increasigly leave out of disgust. Congratulations ExxonMobil for your perverted system of meritocracy. DW drop your self-righteous and resign.

Some of those fat dogs are happy feeding off the weaker dogs, but those fat dogs have to be vigilant against fit stronger dogs that might be stronger.

Nobody can rest in the PIT.
