Thread regarding Dell Inc. layoffs

Why we should not get freaked out by some layoff news

DELL has proven its ability to execute again and again with so many blockbuster quarters in the recent years. But even the greatest companies have to, from time to time, perform necessary clean up which will by the way instill sense of urgency of its lower perfominf employees. The current layoffs are exactly of this kind. No need to panic, just do your work with utmost sense of urgency and be calm. The people who are let go are those who do not perform and will serve as an example for the rest of the lower performing colleagues.

OP have you actually talked to your gen z coworkers? Just because it makes you feel safe to perpetuate a narrative doesn’t mean it’s true. Many of your gen z coworkers are more intelligent and harder working than you. The fact they can’t afford housing is meaningless. And cost of televisions?! What does that have to do with anything? They’re dirt cheap compared to when you were younger. Calm tf down and get to know people instead of judging them from afar.

Michael Dell is Gen X....and Gen Z you crack me up. What kind of car do you drive? How big is/are your television(s) and how many of them do you have? How many roommates do you have, or how many bedrooms do you have, or do you own a house? What town or city? Because when I started out, I had a used car and an apartment in a way-out suburb with roommates and one TV. You're just guilty of expecting you should have everything you want right now. What did you get for a college degree that you need to work a second job to make ends meet (if you're being judicious with what you actually need)?

This only happened because our corporate boomer overlords needed to ensure that their Christmas bonus arrives on time.

Gen Z worker here. People ask why people our age have no sense of company "loyalty", or just an attitude in general. Why shouldn't I? My father, along with everyone else's parents, lost their job in the wake of the '08 recession. His company threw him out like yesterday's garbage, literally overnight. Crawled in a bottle for a year because he couldn't provide for us, I was 12. As an adult now, I can't blame him. The sooner all of you realize that this company owes you (even as someone in their 40s-60s), and me, absolutely nothing....the better.

I work here during the day and bartend at night to make ends meet because this company would rather die than pay market rate competitive wages. I dare anyone over the age of 35 to preach to me about "hard work". "A record setting half/quarter"...my a-s.
...say that to the thousands of people you cut today and yesterday. Say that to their children, especially 2.5 months before Christmas.

Entry level wages= entry level effort...which leads to...entry level results.

"Nobody wants to work"...no...you just don't want to pay...might be a SHOCKING concept, but people in their 20s/30s actually want to save and have a life one day. God forbid I should want to work 1 job, be paid accordingly, and have a family, and not have to throw on a waitressing uniform on after my technical work here that I WENT TO COLLEGE FOR. It's literally a nonexistent dream, especially as I receive a $300+ rent hike as of last week.

The American Dream is dead...because you have to be asleep to believe it.

"I work at Dell"...And?

My friend is owner of a small company - 10 people.
For six month was paying people out of his own packet when revenue went negative.

My consulting company before Dell in MA - about 20 people.
The owner took a loan for a year to weather bad times.

I guess that they are richer then Mr. Dell

Should not be on the thread since left Dell recently so would not "get freaked out by some layoff news". During my Dell-times was actively participating in all very good Dell health programs. But it turned out, that the only thing I had to do to lover my blood pressure by 10 points - get out :)

Whoa… you obviously have no clue who all was laid off yesterday. HiPo people, those in thriving leadership careers, phenomenal brands, strategic thinkers. performing quarter after quarter, actively involved in things like ERGs and development programs , mentoring people, sought out to as someone to want to work with… these are the people who were let go yesterday. This lay off had nothing to do with low performers. If anything it sends a message to those still left that even top talent is at risk.

Ask me, I am in my 60's, we had a record half, never been disciplined, got laid off effective next Friday. i should have noticed earlier, unless you are upper management, Dell will not let you retire, they let you go

Thats the biggest load of cr-p I've ever heard.
Low performers? Ya pull your head out. You have no idea what your talking about.
There may be a few low performers in the mix but 80 percent are cut due to salaries and age.

Tell that to a person in their 50's who have 10 plus years tenue that they were just part of a clean up. This has to be a company HR person to be so tone deaf.
