Verizon Consumer CEO on 5G mobility and home broadband: ‘We need to double down’

Verizon sees 5G fixed wireless access starting with market education and awareness.
Speaking last week at the Bank of America Securities Conference, Verizon EVP and Consumer Group CEO Manon Brouillette discussed how changing consumer and economic dynamics are shifting the traditional logic of subscriber acquisition and upselling. For Verizon, this hits at the confluence of its mobility and home broadband business, including both 5G fixed wireless access and the Fios fiber-based products.

Brouillette called out Verizon’s positioning as a “premium brand” and what that means against a backdrop of worsening consumer sentiment, an inflationary environment and general economic uncertainty. She said U.S. market trends point to a shrinking consumer switching pool and what that means for growth.

“I think the first is to change our mindset,” she said. “The industry in the U.S. has been relying a lot on the switcher pool…That was the easy way to do business. We can no longer rely on the switcher pool to win. There are other ways. For us, it’s bringing stuff to the market where we’re the only one presenting that. We have the best asset—we have the best network so people want to be with us. Now it’s just to convince them.”

Verizon has identified fixed wireless access as a key revenue driver, and significantly expanded the availability of that home broadband service with deployment of its C-Band 5G spectrum. Verizon initially went to market with 5G Home as a mmWave-based service that required a technician to install the antenna and CPE; that process is now self-install.

Brouillette said Verizon is still “on track” to make fixed wireless access available to 50 million homes and 14 million businesses by the end of 2025. “For us, it’s the year of the learning. I don’t see that we’re at our cruising speed…we’re still developing the awareness. We need to educate. It’s a year of building awareness, education for customers, getting our employees excited…The best is ahead of us.”

In execution, she explained, this means developing jo--t account strategies and cross-selling/upselling subscribers to bundle home broadband and mobility services and realize attendant rate plan savings. “It’s doubling down on opportunities that are there,” Brouillette said. “I think we’re doing the right thing and I feel confident about the future.”

You don't have to wait for the 3Q earnings call. Hans dropped a dooce today at the Goldman Sachs' Communacopia. Hans told the investor conference that the company is expecting consumer wireless subscribers. VZ shares dipped by 1% just after midday Wednesday.

Fwa is great until a few people in the same area have it, then it's slow as ba--s, 2 people I know have it , started out running right around 300 now that are lucky to get 25 or 30 mbs, these things come back almost as much as hums!

T Mobile adds Net New Subscribers quarter after quarter after quarter. Verizon on the other hand adds net earnings losing woke execs quarter after quarter after quarter. My guess is that Hans will be gone before the annual meeting next spring. His 5g flim flam has been outed and beaten by TMUS. Embarrassing.

Honestly, the return numbers on FWA devices are crazy bad. We cannot keep up with call volume and complaints and processing.

I am the person that processes returns of FWA equipment. The stuff I send out comes back within days. We call FWA boomerangs cause we toss it and it comes right back lolz.

What will the company do with all
Of the useless mmWave 5G antennas on light poles, traffic lights, and utility poles that suck up fiber and electricity? 2 device connections per day on these towers are hard to justify maintaining .

The quiet brilliance of T-Mobile's 5G

Moreover, Verizon initially used its mmWave holdings to offer fixed wireless access (FWA) services. Verizon is only now working on adding midband spectrum to its FWA play.

Meanwhile, T-Mobile has been pursuing the FWA market with its midband holdings since it closed its purchase of Sprint in 2020. As a result, T-Mobile today counts 1.5 million FWA customers, whereas Verizon only has 384,000.

"T-Mobile will lead the 5G FWA market by the end of 2022, with an estimated 67% share," wrote Counterpoint analyst Tina Lu in a recent release. "It will be followed by Verizon with a 29% share."

T-Mobile also recently announced plans to offer FWA nationwide, albeit capped at 100GB per month for $50.

For its part, T-Mobile has argued that mmWave only makes sense in high-traffic areas like sports stadiums or airports.

"Millimeter wave has its place," T-Mobile networking chief Neville Ray argued in 2020. "But given the economics and physics, you don't build a large-scale 5G network with it."
