Thread regarding ExxonMobil Corp. layoffs

Tax return and money owed to the company

Deloitte was doing my tax return due to being a former expat. This year’s return they claimed I owed part of my refund to Exxon, which I disagreed after going thru all my paystubs and tax numbers.
I hired another company to make sure and they confirmed I don’t own anything to Exxon. I filed my taxes and got my refund.
Now I left Exxon and Deloitte keeps sending me emails asking to file my taxes thru them and refund Exxon what I own.
Can this cause me issues? I don’t own sh-t to Exxon but they are insisting I do.

Received a letter last month saying I owe tax equalization for payment from a lawfirm. Good luck with that. Being laid off I owe them nothing!

I have the same situation. Exxon told me that I’ve supposedly signed an agreement to let Deloitte file my taxes while on international assignment (I’m waiting for a copy). If you don’t let Deloitte file prepare your tax return, they will still try to prepare it based on the W2s you get from Exxon, then they will run their equalization calculation. If it shows a balance to you, it will not be paid. If the balance is to Exxon, they will send to collection. Deloitte is clearly after their fee. Total racket.

I know a guy that quit just before his tax refund received. EM was sending him warning emails about money due EM. He responded that no longer employee and no intention of paying. The collection emails stopped and EM never went after him for the money. Around $25k.

You signed up for this when you accepted the expat assignment.

The company has been filing lawsuits to recover tax equalization payments owed.

They’ll sell it to a debt collector eventually. Don’t answer your phone to unknown callers. It’s probably too small amount for them to come knocking.

They’ll leave vague messages like “hi this is Fred, please call back”… don’t.

Give it five years and they’ll leave you alone.

Deloitte are total shitbags. Don’t expect any help from them.

Did they explain the discrepancy? I agree Deloitte is brutal and I’m regularly finding errors and fighting owed money to EM… but I’ll admit normally when I push back they are open to revising.

They will definitely send the debt to collection. I have a friend who had to file an amended paper tax return and the company was threatening to send the expected refund from the IRS that was “owed” to the company to debt collection before the IRS had even accepted the return and confirmed the refund amount.

I suppose if you don’t care about debt collections on your credit report then you can try to stiff them. But I’m guessing that all they can do is send the debt to collection.

They are very open about the return. Simply hire an accountant for an outside opinion on the accuracy of their work, any money left on the table and to check their equalization methodology, vwhich they describe. Good luck

I love this part of exxon/deloitte payroll taxes. Write us a 20k check every year....

I would imagine that what you may or may not owe to exxon is not enough for them to actually do anything about it.

It may impact your 7 years of tax service they give you once you go off expat. Not sure you want the "benefit" though.
