Thread regarding Ford layoffs

I'm currently at but Ford but looking to switch industries, can I take a voluntary layoff?

I don't have a job lined up, and I know leaving without something lined up is ill advised, I'm curious if there's some mechanism to voluntarily throw my name in the next round of cuts to save someone else's job.

It'll give me the benefits of being laid off while I figure out what I want to do with my life.

@1xnu

If your friendships ended with coworkers still working at Ford simply because you were involuntary let go, then they were never your friends in the 1st place. They were simply coworkers and acquaintances in which the only connection point was mutual employment . Otherwise don't blame Ford for something that you yourself can rectify with a simple phone call to them. (And if you don't have their personal phone numbers then the situation just simply explains itself doesn't it.....)

Yes, you can sign up to be voluntarily laid off - it’s called “resignation”. You’ll get no severance and no benefits.

Would not recommend; just start a job search now while still at work…..much easier.

I feel I was really lucky that I got SIRPd. Others I worked with wanted to go but didn’t get picked. It has driven a stake between some really great friendships. I think that same relationship between between those remaining and Ford has also been tarnished. Nothing about the SIRP was good but it is a result of poor management of people resources. It’s is unfortunate that a few more will probably leave by Nov30 to avoid the lump sum decrease. These folks will probably never be my friends again. We sweat all the same issues and details for the last 30 some years and now we are not equals. I got fired and was shown the door and my friends who are still there will need to sneak out the back door.

Nope, no voluntaries. Do us all a favor and just leave now instead of being dead weight

You can start driving for UBER or Lyft after work as a way of meeting folks who may help you brainstorm career options.

In this economy people will try to buy practical and reliable cars like Toyota Camry (example) for $25K rather than spend $60K on a stupid EV with issues.

"...it could be a long time before more cuts happen..." or it could happen before this year is out.

I expect we'll see more cuts here before the end of 2023Q2 rather than not until 2023Q3 or Q4. Take a step back and look at what's going on economically in the US and around the world, things are getting really rough for an awful lot of people already and looking like a lot worse is on the way. People who can't afford decent food and housing aren't buying new cars or subscriptions for nice-to-haves either.

Despite what you read on these boards, it could be a long time before more cuts happen. And maybe the cuts wouldn't be directed at your team. And maybe your manager wouldn't have any say in who gets cut or maybe they have someone else in mind.

Stop being a pu--y and waiting for Ford to possibly send you packing. Go find a new job now. Or find a counselor if you are depressed.

Volunteer layoff can be taken only after it is offered to you and not before it is offered

Sign up on LinkedIn and start applying for other jobs you meet the qualifications for. In my opinion it is better to find a job and leave, than to live in uncertainty at Ford.

@ OP - Sign up to get cut, with no job? Let alone try to go into a different industry? That is insane. I thought I was crazy for buying lotto tickets. Actually I'll win the Lotto, before you can get a job different industry with no current job.

Is Ford that bad? Going to work can be miserable no matter what job you have. Try job hopping around within Ford before leaving. Why would you quit before having another job lined up anyways?
