Thread regarding ExxonMobil Corp. layoffs

How does one get promoted this fast???

A "Chief" in the R&D org recently revealed his promotion history saying "I got 1 promotion in my first 10 years and 5 in my last ten". That is just about impossible for a mere mortal. If you were that poor a performer in your early years (1 CL in first 10 years is really bad) there is no way you can recover to get 1 CL every 2 years for 10 years!

Oh wait this is rhetorical - he is in a diversity group and ~ 10 years ago is when our diversity initiative went from reasonable to insane.

I thought I recognized the chief from the description in the OP. Then, a few days ago, I was at an event where that chief retold this exact story about his career progression. Unlike the contention of the OP, it wasn’t at all about race, but rather about working for a supervisor who had the courage of conviction to advocate for his employees instead of being threatened by them. Promoting people who were advancing technology with a focus on the future, rather than just managing their own careers.

I will also say that timing played a huge part in this. I don’t think 5 technical ladder promotions in 10 years will ever happen again in the “annual employment contract” mode we are in today

The days of getting ahead being a recent generational native are past.

As I understand it, you will find the Sponsor Request Form (SRF) just to the right as you walk in the building (northwest side ).

If it's not there then I suggest you ask your Manager or VP for the form (Re: SRF 1022--17EMITEMHR Vb).

Happy to Help

I am an EM employee but no one has talked to me about being my sponsor. It sounds like a great idea. A sponsor might improve my overall performance. How long does it take to get a sponsor once I make the request. I guess I should ask my supervisor about the process. Take care every one!

Start with a Ph.D and a post-doc, that used to be CL 26. Stuck at 26 for 10 ys because most people used to retire at 27. Make 27 after 10 or 11 ys, then have MANy people retire between 2009 and 2014, opening the positions. Some managers used the openings to fix careers of some good people who had been stuck. Get promoted to 28, move to 29 used to be quick, required only direct manager (usually only 2 years from 28 to 29). Move to CL30 was way harder, although some did, now it’s almost impossible.

@uks+1iJ7rMGB If you want to look at it that way, go ahead, but the initiatives I’ve taken on have been things that make day to day work easier for myself, my coworkers, and the teams I work with. Most importantly, they’ve been projects I find interesting and want to work on and not just some pointless pet project

...took on additional initiatives with the extra time...

In other words, brown-nosed up his way.

This thread veered into diversity topic.

The data indicate women and minorities at executive level are low relative to the pipeline of available candidates, and certainly very low if you compare it to the general demographics of the US population. However, relative to the O&G industry, ExxonMobil is right in there with the pack. So EM give yourself a pat on the back for being slightly above average.

In my opinion, I can't say there are many good female minority leaders left in the company, particularly in technical or operations.

White guy here, and my career path closely mirrors what you’re describing. How’d I turn things around? I found my niche within the company and made myself critical to my group’s success during transitional times and took on additional initiatives with the extra time I had from knowing how to do my job efficiently. It’s not always about race or gender

Well the person in question isn't an asian women (though that one is a good example too). Both are diversity yes.

She is an asian woman.

asian+woman+science = 3 minorities in one person.

HR can get to its diversity quotas while minimizing headcount. Pure optimization.
