Thread regarding AT&T layoffs

Will the 3rd Quarter earnings report

cause T to layoff bargained for employees or lift the hiring freeze depending on how it goes? If the results are less than expected, is there still another date for a craft layoff announcement?

It all depends on what Stankey "WANTS" the earnings report to say. Every COO and CFO and CEO and ALL accountants know that if you torture the data long enough you can get it to say anything you want........

More customers ordering fiber is gonna lift the hiring freeze. Else, why do we need more workers if there isn't more work?

Wishing surpluses on anyone is pretty terrible. Most people just want to work and provide for their families S

Legacy T techs have a watermark of 600 which last through the next contract, but there about 900 of them throughout all 50 states. Essentially, 2/3 of them are protected and the rest can be surplused at anytime. It’s the other regions such as BellSouth, Ameritech, SBC, etc. that supposedly have the no layoff clause on their contract through the end of 2023. Legacy T techa are already on a skeleton crew as it is thanks to many previous layoffs.

It would be wonderful if craft was part of the layoffs being executed today! I know there's been mention many times on this site that the legacy T craft are protected from layoffs through the end of 2022, but c'mon, we all know there are techs sitting around with little or no work every day! It's even mentioned repeatedly on this website.

Too many workers doing little or nothing. We need to get rid of those.

We are adding BIG new customers with thousands of outlets and cannot hire or backfill. I guess it is cheaper short term to pay out fines/credits for service level failures, but that will only last till resigning contracts come due again.

Our organization actually needs 5 or 6 technicians, but can’t hire or transfer in due to the freeze. Not a whole lot of options other than to outsource the work.

Work volume and hiring will be based on financial and available free cash. If there was not enough Cost cutting lending into Q3 investor meetings, expect no growth and work. Then the fun will begin.

It depends on how much work needs to be done. If there is more work, AT&T will hire. If they don't need the workers, then layoffs. That's how businesses work.

Hiring internally costs your dept money. So it may not cost the company money, your organization doesn’t want to increase their headcount.
Most of what happens a T is based on the organization. The directive might be to lower cost, it’s the org that has to decide how to do that….layoff, cutback on travel or some other option- depending on the org

Hopefully, lack of work is the only guiding reason for layoffs. There should be no make-work programs at AT&T regardless of earnings.

I'm also in HR. This is getting very boring, not at all what I signed on for. Ever since I've been here , 8 years, it's been feast or famine. No happy medium whatsoever. Yesterday we played corn ho-e the better part of the day. Today we played board games, monopoly, shutes & ladders, candyland, etc. If things don't improve, I'm going to start looking elsewhere for a job. HR jobs are not that plentiful, it seems like for the past 10 years, everyone wants to work in HR.

Pretty sure they’re awaiting on how many people are retiring this year due to the significant drop in the lump sum . My guess is the first quarter of 2023

I'm a senior HR Compensation Consultant. I love when we have hiring freezes because I can just sit back, relax and catch up on my Netflix shows!

Bargained employees have a window every 3 months and the next surplus announcement date is 12/15 and those employees would be off payroll by the end of the 1st quarter next year. As far as the hiring freeze, who knows. I’m sure HR loves the hiring freeze because they can sit around and do nothing all day as opposed to occasionally having to do something when we actually are hiring.

The whole freeze doesn’t make a lot of sense, because if we just hire internally then we aren’t taking on additional head count. If they aren’t laying people off, they might as well let people try to transfer to where they want to be.
