Mgmt holds back people's careers

No one should allow themselves to be treated in the way that the best and most capable are treated here. Why is management holding back talented people so much?

I got the impression that the better the employee, the greater the manager's animosity towards him/her. It is not surprising they are leaving for other companies.

I totally agree with that. It's like the manager has a "Who do they think they are?!?!" attitude towards them.

Can anyone name another company where the code was so bad that even people at the Distinguished Engineer level got pulled out of real work to help the rank and file fix bugs?

Very common for Indian managers. This chick won't let me attend this critical training.

This type of post is so very recurrent here at the Cisco thread. I sometimes check in other threads of Microsoft, Amazon, Salesforce, Apple, VMware, Oracle, Alphabet, etc. but we don't really see this type of negative/hating-company post posted almost everyday like Cisco's.

The company's toxic culture is not just within the US offices, but other offices in Asia, Japan, and EMEA as well.

We are often asked to submit a survey like the Great Work Place survey, Qtrly Engagement Pulse survey, etc. There are so many surveys throughout the year indeed. But howsoever we answer and respond, Cisco's culture NEVER ever changes as long as current managers and leaders, especially those who have been staying at Cisco for over 20 years without having ever worked at outside Cisco, continue to remain at Cisco.

Those managers and leaders are the most significant source of its toxic culture.

However, HR's, VPs, Directors, Country Managers will NEVER try to remove those people, and they even respect those long-tenured employees in front of everyone and via email, and through stupid childish awards/rewards/recognitions. That's the fundamental prob.

Truly skilled professionals will soon leave Cisco because it's obviously not good for their career.

superstars are obtained through acquisitions, we have nothing close to superstars internally

LOL. Superstars obtained through acquisitions leave as soon as their stock options vest or whatever incentive was given to them to stay when they were acquired.

There are still some superstars around that have stayed. They're getting fewer & fewer. I was part of a team that was all rockstars and the core team had been stable for 10+ yrs. I was the last one in, and arguably the least performer on the team, not counting the ones that didn't make it a year, so I was one of several who were let go back in the huge purge of 2016. Between 2016 & 2020, over half of the team quit. Half of the remaining ones took internal transfers to new roles and the team is now sh-t. Support sucks, communication about application outages and upgrades go out, and then slip a half dozen times before the work is done. I'm so glad I did not accept an offer to rejoin that team in 2018.

Maybe the great employees who think this lack self awareness about how great they really are.

It's just the same as High School popularity hierarchy.

Don't be jealous because you aren't one of the cool kids.

Not everyone is special, beautiful, popular, and important.

Now you have french fries to make and a line of customers at the register and the drive through is backing up. Get back to work and make sure the floors are mopped and the bathrooms are clean before you close the store.

Only when you are finally smart enough to realize this is all just a big game, that if you really set your mind to things and push yourself; you could probably do just as good as the enlightened ones.

You are in charge of your life. Don't give that control away to a j@ck@$$ manager.

I know a guy that’s been at Cisco for over 25 years. He’s a grade 13 now. Just cracked that 200k/yr nut.

I also know guys that are 5-10 years on in their careers who left Cisco and make the same amount or more.

Truth is that Cisco takes care of no one. At least no one below VP level.

My 300lb leader keep asking people to sign-up new tasks. Most of us took 2-3 people's tasks already. Slave drive is highly regards in my team.

Not saying I am talented or the best. But I worked my heart out for this company for a few years way beyond my call of duty before I realised that there was nothing but deception behind those verbal show of appreciation from management . I never asked for a promotion or a career graph. But then came days when I was invited to calls and was given a distinct impression that despite all that I did, I was not really needed where business is concerned and I was not really appreciated. At my grade, my position may become at risk. I took the hint after a few of those talks, sent my CV around and resigned one fine morning.

Quiet firing at its best. Welcome to Cisco!
