Thread regarding Intel Corp. layoffs

Finding a new position during layoffs

Does Intel ever give employees a chance to find another position during layoffs if they're affected? A friend who works at Google was affected by recent cuts but he was told he had 60 days to find another role if he wanted to stay. I haven't heard of Intel doing anything similar but maybe somebody else did?

Yes, Intel has "allowed" people in ZBB'd projects to find other groups. However, I also know of cases where they ZBB'd the entire group and they made it hard for those people to find jobs because there were hiring freezes in most other groups in the company. ZBB'd Google employees are facing this situation now, especially if they are a more junior L3/L4 engineer who were hired during the past 2 years. If you are an established L5/L6 senior/staff engineer at Google, people will make room for you, but if you are a junior SWE, good luck.

If you take the voluntary separation, are you eligible for Unemployment Compensation?

They usually do one of three things:

  1. Offer voluntary separation with severance package (if you don't take it, you may be involuntarily separated)
  2. Redeployment, which means you have a certain amount of time to find another job at the company
  3. Involuntary separation with severance package

This is what they have done in the past, but may not be what they do in the future.
