When I hired in in 1981, I was told this was a cradle to grave job. Now I am starting to question that reality. I think everyone working here is walking on eggshells, wondering when their number will be called.

You misunderstood. Cradle to grave meant it would put you in the grave.

OP here, without disclosing my net worth, let's just say I feel very good about my financial situation. I love my work. Certainly not overworked, but work overtime weekly for the cold hard cash. One would be hard pressed to find a better gig anywhere. I want to work another 10 years which seems doable. Living the good life.
Why are you still here with 41 years? You should have $2M-$3M in 401k and all other assists like home paid for. Heck, even if you started at 18 you are retirement age and just need to fund insurance. You should have left before end of 2021 and you would have gotten the insurance subsidies.

That reality ceased to exist the moment they stopped offering retiree benefits to new hires in the late 90s. Consider yourself lucky that you made it 40+ years. People have been walking on egg-shells for a long time, and due to the ridiculous levels of management in some business units/empire building and rightly so. When I was there, the only management decisions I saw were all fear based in spite of the rhetoric around doing what makes sense for the business.
