Thread regarding ExxonMobil Corp. layoffs

Office Fetish?

Many of you seem to have a massive hard-on for the office. Personally, I don’t get it. Maybe it’s a generational thing. I’m pretty sure it has nothing to do with collaboration, productivity, or keeping jobs from going to India though.

There’s an easy solution to this dilemma: all of the people who fetishize the office can drive to/from it every day, and the people who like WFH can WFH. Everyone wins.

But that’s not what you office-fetishists want, is it? What you really want is to drag everybody who isn’t you in with you everyday and make them as miserable as you are.

During Covid, I worked from my cubicle on campus every day. My Supervisor said it was fine because nobody else on the whole floor.

I rarely saw another cubicle grunt until the week after the layoff was announced. I saw so many people that I had never seen all year. Everyone trying for face time. It took 4 weeks to get back to near zero on our floor.

I had an office fetish. We kept it going for 15 years and nobody figured it out.

Business trips were great together.

@1ykp Bullsh^t.

What you said is just another cop-out used by management.

When an engineer is present, it’s for liability/insurance reasons, not because their job requires it, especially at a place like Exxon, where “engineering” entails reading a graph and talking about it in a Zoom meeting.

Sounds like we need to layoff more people in Houston or move them closer to the wellhead. If your work has no point maybe you should find some work that does.

Because HiPo’s are unable to hone their or-l skills remotely

Lots of engineering jobs require an on site presence per HR job role, so they can’t be 100% remote.

It’s totally a CONTROL fetish.

The boys in Dallas go limp over a perceived lack of control. That’s why they are coming to campus. To get their groove back.
