Thread regarding ExxonMobil Corp. layoffs

Disrespect

As a technical professional and experienced hire, I’m appalled at the lack of respect given to those who are truly at the top of their field. In my former companies, SMEs are never treated with such disrespect. SMEs are those who worked years and even decades in their field and recognized by industry peers. SMEs are not those who are declared an SME by managements after doing a few 1 or 2 year assignment and checking off boxes. And SMEs are not PowerPoint jockeys or expert googlers who regurgitate whatever nonsense they read on the internet.

Here, technical people are viewed as cogs in the wheel by the business and by management who have no technical depth. Technical professionals are treated as hired hands, expected to support whatever bullsh-t ideas the “business” comes up with if given a WBS.

I’m done with this dysfunctional place.

My arrogant former manager refused to believe the business and technical recommendations I provided as it didn’t line up with the story he fed up the chain. His idea was so stupid that it literally would break all laws of thermodynamics. Rather than be humble, he tried circumvention and gaslighting techniques. Then moved me to another role so he can appoint a more junior and compliant person in my place to execute all the nonsense idea. Then damage my career by reporting that I don’t manage conflict, is negative, and resistant to change. Well, 2 years later and after many wasted hours, his idea is still a failure. But all that is quietly swept under the rug because I guess he is sponsored.

So much for courage of conviction

The management selection criteria is simple: find the technical losers and yes nodding people who are willing to become shameless liars and upper management puppets. Paper pushers, power point and meeting masters get the top priority.

This perpetuates itself, possibly because managers only attending the ranking sessions and no SMEs attend.<

@1qyl, excellent point; it's a form of cultural corporate inbreeding.

OP , you have just now figured this out? EM and Exxon heritage HR plan is to look for management material. Anyone who can't cut it is cast to a lowly technical role. You are just a f n tool. Keep cashing your checks or GTFO, pick one.

@OP If you’re an experienced technical professional then you should have known better than to take a position with Exxon or any other similar company.

Every role, including the proclaimed SME, must be business minded first.

Achieving SME status in your specialty is judged as a failure in EM culture.

Unless the Subject Matter that you master is PowerPoint, a-s kissing, and pleasing your Sponsor.

An SME and a Manager are both CL29 and ranked against each other. The SME that earned $10 million extra profit for EM is always ranked lower than the sponsored manager that made poor decisions and lost $10 million.

This perpetuates itself, possibly because managers only attending the ranking sessions and no SMEs attend.

OP - it doesn't matter if you're a SME or top of your field. Everyone should be respected. You, my friend, are Exxonmobilized

30 years of experience and working for 2 other Fortune 100 companies and I have never felt as undervalued as I have for the past eight years with XOM. I have been supervised by people who have little or no experience in my field of expertise but they still act like they need to teach me. Any work I did for another employer doesn’t count in XOM eyes. I need to learn the XOM way to do it right.

I am still amazed at the general arrogance of the employees that were hired by XOM out of college and have never worked anywhere else.
