Thread regarding Verizon Communications Inc. layoffs

Too many layers of management

I care less and less about this company, but I'm still interested in whether there will EVER be at least an approximately ideal manager to employee ratio?

The main problem is within operations/ engineering. VZ micro manages the entire network down to the OSI model. They have one group responsible for every layer and even more groups within those groups. For instance let’s start with the 1st layer of the network (physical layer) they have a massive operations organization that simply is in charge of plugging things in, then you have union contracts that make no sense in regards to what job titles are allowed to plug certain things in…, this sane formula is repeated at each layer… then they outsource certain engineering functions to offshore. Makes zero sense

The fattest parts of the company generate little to no revenue and are the ones coming up with these d-mb a-s re-orgs and structures.

Management layers and Direct reports. What are the merits of a traditional model? Why is the traditional model current in today's economy? Span of control from the previous century has changed. Remote work has changed. Technology eases management of personnel and teams. Why is Verizon so so out-of-touch??

Traditional models had it at 8 to 1, but depending on the work it can go to 13 to 1. When you see managers with fewer/no reports two things to keep in mind.
One: In order for the salary to be competitive with the job function, sometimes the title has to have the manager or director designation.
Two: The manager may be indirectly managing or dotted line managing folks.

Not saying there isn't fat that could be trimmed at the manager/director level, but this may be how HR/leadership sees it.

Oh yea, this was the Ajay model. Shortly after he moved over from wireless to wireline AW would replace one director with 3 of his friends and before you know it, the IT management team Director and above grew 3 fold. Verizon 2.0 gutted IT at first and second level, but they should have cut 50% of Directors and above overhead waste. This is when I lost all respect for Hans and knew he was not up to the task to lead us.
