Thread regarding ExxonMobil Corp. layoffs

Anyone seen Amanda Rico's post on LinkedIn?

Did anyone see a couple of Amanda Rico's posts about XOM on LinkedIn? What are you thoughts? I feel her posts had exposed XOM topic that is on every employees and former employees mind but none dares to open it up like she did. A lot of people chimed in.

The ranking system has been around since the 1980's. It has slightly evolved over the years. For example, you used to submit your knowledgeable others to your supervisor but they were not obligated to solicit feedback from any of them. I once had a stellar year and submitted five CL-30+ executives/venture managers as my knowledgeable others.

My manager chose not to solicit feedback from any other them because he and his boss did not want me moving up in the rankings that year. Their choice of knowledgeable others justified their lowering my ranking even though I had no direct contact with any of the CL-25 to -27 individuals that provided feedback.

The ranking system eventually was changed so that your knowledgeable other suggestions were tracked electronically even though the first line supervisor could still solicit other feedback.

I even knew one employee that submitted the same performance review verbatim for 10+ years before he retired. There was not one supervisor/manager that picked up in the ranking sessions that this employee was just copying and pasting the same review 10+ years in a row.

Yes, the ranking system is seriously biased and is skewed toward "which manager has the biggest stick" when it comes to ranking employees.

In 2020, the ranking system was changed so that any employee can go from the top 10% to the bottom 10% in less than 12 months.

Previously, if you were the top 10%, you could only drop from the top 1/3 to the middle 1/3 in one year and in year 2 you would only drop from the middle 1/3 to the bottom 1/3. It would take 3 years to go from the top 10% to the bottom 10%.

The previous system tried to prevent managers from imposing their personal biasness's for at least three years.

In 2020, the top 10% could go to the bottom 10% in less than 12 months. This gave management the ultimate freedom to get rid of employees that were not long term "cultural fits" regardless of their yearly technical performance.

We were 75,000 regular employees at the end of 2019. At the end of 2021, we were a corporation of 63,000 employees. It is expected that we will be between 40,000 to 50,000 employees by the end of 2023.

Bottom line, the current ranking system with the existing ultimate freedom to significantly move people from the top 10% to the bottom 10% in the ranking will not change until we reach our target goal of 40,000 to 50,000 regular employees.

It is hard to believe that one third of the employees that will or has been dismissed due to performance is in the bottom 10% regarding their performance between 2020 and 2023.

Brave but we have had these discussions already with our managers. The ranking system and the destruction it is causing is nothing new to management. We have told them and have been told that this has been passed higher up.

@qjf+1ipSteGf yup! No wonder a company that strictly prevented its employees to post anything on social media is now using social media and encouraging employees to do the same in full force. Communications Advisor job may be in demand and safest at XOM at the moment but perhaps painful as well for a person in it.
