"What is the current IT FCG salary?" I think you mean, what are the salary ranges. If they brought in an FCG with Ph.D as a GSR8 then the range would be the same as for all GSR8s and what the person came in at depends on their negotiating skills when hired.

The reason so many engineers go into management after being an engineer for a few years, is because they want more money and find out out there is a limit when staying technical. That's true at most companies such as Motorola.

I say, if money is your primary motivation then you should never get an engineering degree in the first place. Get a business degree specializing in finance or sales/marketing. Corporate sales is the place to get the BIG MONEY apart from being a senior executive.

I shed no tears for engineers who cry about not being able to get infinite 10% raises every year. They didn't do their career homework before getting the degree. Believe me when I say that I have worked at real software companies and its the same as it is a Ford. Pay ceiling for technical people but not for management.

Fast progression those might be the effects of a tight labor market also.

Yep. I started as a GSR6 and worked my way up for over 20 years. Now a GSR8, I received a call from someone brand new in a similar position, working on a different area, wanting to know my process. That person was also a GSR8. Doesn't make me feel appreciated.

And if you dont go into management, you can spend 25 years with the company and end up a Senior Engineer making only about 30k more, then get told your skill-set is irrelevant, so goodbye.

If you want to stay technical with no management ambitions (totally sane idea), look somewhere else to donate 30 years of your life. Else you will find yourself as a great Engineer forced into low-paying, low-level management just to keep up your pay with inflation... and you'll hate it.

I'm sure it varies by the person, there isn't a "FCG salary". Most come in as GSR 5 or 6, mid-70s.
