Thread regarding ExxonMobil Corp. layoffs

Hot desking

Hot desking:

  1. Makes me feel unwelcome at my place of employment
  2. Reminds me that my employment is temporary and transactionary.
  3. Seems ridiculous when I spend more waking hours at work than with my spouse, but don’t even get a small desk-worth of real estate I can personalize.

I’m old. Maybe young people see it differently. If so, please comment.

Seems like it is enforcing a culture where people just clock-in for their 8 hours and then leave, and where anyone can quit (or be fired) on a whim. You no longer need a box to just walk out the door.

Unclear on the issue here... We3 objective is to reduce the required number of desks and office square foot. WFH achieves that... So WFH 100% folks?

WE3 implementation at a location with surplus of desks is obviously abuse of employees to motivate attrition.

Every Exec in the approval chain to implement WE3 should be forced to be subjected to WE3.

@jfo I believe this thread was referring to MPT office locations, not site rotator situations

@xch you had me until "2 weeks notice." Why? I will give 2 days notice. That's if I quit on a Wednesday.

Unbelievable a campus built for 10k, that an employee or contractor cannot have a permanent desk to sit at everytime they come to work.

Will the big shots from Dallas be subjected to this bs when they move down?
So glad I'm retired and don't have to deal with this cr-p.

What a f n joke. All that room in the big fancy campus and Some of us are relegated to "hot desking" like the paean help? What is with this f n Company and its constant need to create class distinctions and demean some people?

We3 to be managed by an MSP from the BTC. How’s that for a new jingle.

No, USB is not allowed.

Nor would large monitors with the hot desking.

They tried to get rid of paper.

@1rbf There’s something called a USB that can help you with that. Cloud storage is a thing too.

I’m young and I agree with OP sentiment. We need a place to sit, especially engineers that have tons of physical drawings and documentation

@OP WFH solves your problem, but you older guys seem to have several issues with it, for reasons that nobody under the age of 40 fully understands.

Please do not invoke “productivity” and “collaboration” as reasons for being in the office. Neither thing takes place there.

Whenever I moved to a new floor and office, the first thing I did was use disinfectant wipes on everything in there, just like a hotel room. I can't imagine having to wipe everything down each time I go into the office. Just hoping the most recent occupant didn't leave behind something contagious.

It could be worse. Have you seen the office in Midland or even worse Carlsbad? Compare it to what our competition has. If this is what winning looks like I'd rather be losing.

When I was recruited into the company one of the selling points the recruiters harped on was that you would have a private office from your first day as an employee. Look how far we have fallen. The company is dying a slow death and sliding into irrelivancy. No longer a coveted place to work that treats employees better than other options.

@jfo+1iqzxnNY you are a great example of what is wrong. Just because we can and do put up with something doesn't mean it is ideal or that we shouldn't be striving for something better. Keep settling and one day you will wake up and realize you could have done much better.

OP. oh please; on location we slept 4 to a 8 x 10 foot room and 8 per bathroom between two rooms. Zero privacy for 28 days every other month. My bunk mates were occasionally unwashed big hulks that could f art up a storm throughout the night. I got through it. It was not ideal :))

You will work through it, then laugh about it in retirement.

Everybuddy can get a little drip of spl00ge on the knee the next day.

How far we have fallen. When I came out of school everyone had a proper office. For 34 years it's mostly been the case until EMHC came along. Now hot desking. I think the other poster is correct. Maintain your dignity and WFH.

D: @emo+1iqzxnNY - Adapt or leave?

Why not try to improve a situation instead of adapting or leaving? I remember when I was in school “open concept” was all the rage. I managed , but it was unnecessarily difficult. My mother, along with many teachers, expressed how open concept was a disaster. After enough people spoke up, open concepts were scrapped.

I’m glad those teachers didn’t adapt or leave and I hope EM people continue to speak up about things that do not work.

I kept my desk completely clear of anything personal for nearly 3 years. It’s part of my the exit strategy for the day I had enough of this toxic place.

Resigned, gave 2 weeks notice, turn in files and computer. No photos. No long farewells. No boxes. Done.

Years ago, as an EM engineer, we went from a proper office for each of us to cubicles. Guess what, I survived.

Now you’re going from a cubicle with deck to a cubical with a hot desk. Oh dear, that must the worst ever. I feel so bad for you. I just can’t image the pain.

Man OP, I got all excited reading the headline "Hot Desking."

Thought it was some innovative out of the box HR program for employee retention where we get to bend over the really hot interns over the desk.....

OP, I’m old as well.

We used to hot desk and hot BED on the rig. I never liked hot desk/bedding but I did to feed a family of 6. Did it for years every other month (28/28). Now, those days are long gone for me, only memories left.

Take care. Peace.
