Quiet Quiting vs Quiet Firing

If you are active on LinkedIn and reading the news, you probably came across “Quiet Quitting” and “Quiet Firing.”

Quiet Quitting: Talent decision and behavior to do just enough work without extra effort but without crossing the termination line due to poor compensation, lack of incentives or support, zero work/life balance, high burnout to name a few.

Quiet Firing: Decision and behavior by employers to not give employees higher compensation but overload them with responsibilities leading to burnout due to accessibility demands 24/7 in addition to
lack of respect or no or few raises/promotions.

“Quiet quitting” is a doublespeak term that is used pejoratively to describe employees who set boundaries between work/life and perform their duties within the parameters of their job description.

A better reference to behavior of this kind would be “doing what you were hired to do and are currently being paid for”.

I have no idea how we got to the point in our language where quitting became the new working. We can add this to the ever-expanding list of absurdities that now define modern life.

I think EM is mastering the “quiet firing” game. Sadly, this will both insure they will lose talent as well as encourage rampant “quiet quitting”.

ExxonMobil is the most fertile land to cultivate both.
