Thread regarding Cisco Systems Inc. layoffs

Empty Offices

The local Cisco office I have worked at for 10+ years is nearly completely empty now. Engineers go to the office for a couple hours only if they have lab work to do. No one actually goes to the office to “work”. Is this experience the same at other sites? Cisco says we are working hybrid, but it feels like fully remote to me. Cisco should either get people back in the office, or get rid of the real estate.

Main reason that offices are empty is that most employees are working 2 jobs and/or started their own company and can't work in the Cisco office and risk being caught

Yes similar situation everywhere. Goes to show how little leadership there is across the board. If I was CEO I'd at least make a statement asking everyone to be present 3 days a week in SJC and TAC centers.

They closed our office right after Covid started. We left in March. Returned in September to collect any remaining items. Cisco is still paying the lease. The signage is still on the door and building. It's a multi-tenant building, but still sad to see the Cisco logo and know that we'll never go back.

My office used to have 1919 employees before covid hit. Now only 19 employees go into the office. What happened to the other 19?

I've driven by Corp HQ in SJ a few times during business hours recently and have been surprised how empty all the parking lots are!

Times have changed. My local office was full when I quit Cisco 19 years ago.

It makes business sense to go after the remote offices that charge the most to house employees, labs, and data centers.

I get lonely and I know there’s a lot of other people who feel the same way.

Don't worry mate, you have us, the thelayoff.com community :D

I agree that they should go fully remote and close down the offices. Then they should sell them to developers who’ll convert the buildings to residential apartments. That’ll help push down home prices so more people can afford to live in overpriced cities across the country.

Then, ideally, society should be encouraged to engage with their community in recreational/charitable activities.

Personally, I struggle to leave the house but a few times a week now. Sad because I get lonely and I know there’s a lot of other people who feel the same way. Unfortunately, people have become so insular. My friend group has dwindled to just a handful people outside of my family.

That, and almost every building has a data center or lab in it, which would have to be moved to be consolidated somewhere else. And some buildings are at electrical capacity due to labs and/or data centers such that they can't move more into it.

But I agree most building are completely empty, house keeping sits around playing on their phones because there's no trash to cary out, no toilet paper to replace, etc.

I think I've been in the building once or twice to scan in some documents or make copies rather than paying to do it at an FedEx location. Whatever happened to Kinko's for making copies?

They are trying to sell the real estate but there aren’t exactly a lot of buyers these days.
