Of course there are always exceptions, but I think that most managers are actually just taking advantage of the fact that some of us still can't find a better job.
Maybe I'm exaggerating a bit, but they seem to be able to feel how much someone cares about this job and how afraid they are of losing it.
Those who show fear of losing work are automatically put in an awkward position, because they get overwhelmed with so much work that it makes their stay here unbearable.

Never show fear to bullies! Thats how they get power. HW leaders are ALL bullies.
Managers are far more fearful than individual contributors.
