It is clear that the company wants us to leave on our own in order to save a little on severance pay, but in my opinion, being here and waiting for severance pay is in any case just a waste of time. Can you even imagine this place in five years? This place is doomed and there is no hope that it will get any better.

Employees are transitory.
Now you got it! Stankey and Santone do not want any employee staying longer than five years. They believe in the transient employee process, kick everyone out with five years of service. Nothing wrong with that just so long as you understand that going in. Other companies are doing the same, saves a boatload on bennies.
T needs many technicians for the Business Services work to provide its business customers the many services it offers. Definitely, no cuts in this business sector!
The future is automation. T-Mobile and Verizon are also automating. We will need some technicians, software engineers and not a lot more. Phone and plans can be purchased online, billing automated, customer service can be automated. What else is left? The future is not people but machines. Sorry- there’s no future here or any other company.
By 2050 the expected unemployment rate will be 50%. Most folks will be getting UBI.
There is a future here with T, but definitely have your resume` ready at all times. I've been with T for almost 4 decades and have always had mine ready, up to date! I've survived this company's incessant layoffs year after year, but it was extremely stressful!
Don't take anything for granted when it comes to your future with T!
There is absolutely a future here, however not for the vast majority here today. Revenues cannot support the headcount, debt service, eroding margins and competitive losses.

Who is waiting for severance pay? If you have great options does a few months pay nullify that? The same reason that people think/know/whatever there will be layoffs is the same reason a lot of people are staying if they can:
It is not as rosy for companies on the outside either.
Not the best time for a lot of reasons, unless you are very sure you can find something fast, to be jumping ship.
