Would you recommend work in Oil and Gas to a new college graduate?

What would you say?

It's a very unstable field with a high risk / reward values. It's not for everyone. Apply at your own risk.

Absolutely NO, unless the student has some connection to management to be guaranteed getting a Sponsor.

Working at EM with a sponsor is still a good path if you can get it, but without a sponsor it is like a series of 1 year contracts with no job security.

This is a really good question. Before starting to type I spent 30 minutes thinking if the answer should be a simple yes or no. I then concluded that the answer is No if someone is offered a job at an IOC in North America. A new college grad wants opportunities and enthusiasm in any new job with the only promise being that the new hire is given true opportunities and is to be respected. No more and no less. There is no respect that will be given to a new hire if hired into an IOC in the North America business environment, and very unfortunately the opportunity space is actually contracting as the North American based IOCs focus solely on cost cutting in this stagnating commodity driven business environment while attempting to compete at global scale with Middle East, India, and China since technology is really not required to drill and frac at lowest unit price but cost cutting is required to drill and frac at lowest unit price. Not really a great long term outlook if you are new college grad aspiring for a long term career that you can be proud of when you contemplate retirement in 40 years and then evaluate what you contributed to society and your local community. I would never advise my child to take a job with any North America IOC, as I would tell them that they would either be fired or unhappy with their career choice within 5-10 years.

Absolutely not. It’s not only the industry. A colleague sent an email to the entire team explaining why she would be absent from her desk for a couple of hours. This company has a serious problem.

No . Sometimes in life appreciate the offer and thought of it. Exxon is a culture of kool aid drinking. Might as well be it’s own Jonestown.

It would be the same as telling a 1979 grad to work for US Steel.
