What are some signs so one can prepare?

Strange. Almost all these perceptions have happened to me. Unfortunately, I’m still here. I keep getting shuffled from one supervisor to the next. Is it because I’ve been here so long that it’s cheaper to just wait me out than pay me a big fat juicy golden severance?
I really do think that there is some credibility to the rumor about the invaluable employee notation. In other words, did someone make a note in my HR records that I’m invaluable no matter what?

Step 1: work for WF.
You are officially at risk.

Is an early morning meeting a sign of impending layoff?

They send you a cardboard box with RIF on the side with instructions to fill with personal item by x date.

Your boss stops talking to you.

Your co workers now have names with lots of consonants.

Emails tell you to do the needful.

You no longer have a permanent desk.

You go to workday and you can’t schedule PTO past a certain date.

You call tech connect about a problem and they tell you that you won’t have it for long without fixing it.

You get an unscheduled meeting notice for an unknown meeting.

Have you been with the company longer than Charlie? Then you're gonna get laid off.

I was laid off after telling my boss how horrible my job had become. I was moved away from what I was hired to do. I was never given a choice where I ended up.
The one time a 2 up manager asked what I did everyday, they did not believe me.

Manager asks you to cross train a lower- paid employee. It’s happened time and time again at WFA. (Yes - cross training is a beneficial process at better-run companies with trustworthy leaders, but not at Wells Fargo. Don’t trust them for one second.)

In my department, we have seen "new" positions being created in India ahead of layoffs 3 times now. Each time a "new" India position is created, once the India person has been hired and is up to speed, another US employee in our department with a similar or the same role gets laid off. I asked my manager about the trend, and he confirmed he was told to hire an Indian and get the person they are replacing to train the Indian on their job before they get axed. So that could be an indication.

Sometimes there are none but here is what I have noticed.

  • Boss avoiding you.
  • Work being assigned to someone else.
  • Management starts asking what you do, and train others.
  • Making sure there's enough coverage.
  • Weekly meetings all of the sudden cancelled.
  • Making sure your contact information is updated. I.e. address, home email, and home phone numbers.
