Manager support?

Is it normal to be on your own to get the right tools and system access needed in order to do my job? My manager is always asking for me to do things and I’ve told them over and over I can’t even access the information.

Is there some sort of support from the tech groups that can help me do this?

Thinking I made a big mistake working here….

To @vsh+1jBf0B90. I can relate! My manager constantly flipped problems, customer queries, internal follow up to me via forwarded emails copying all, without ever a heads up. One of several reasons I finally left.

Over the last 5 of my 7 years, my managers have always asked our team to submit our own write ups for our own periodic reviews/ MPPs. “Help me help you” one of them always said. Then they just copy and paste into the system and don’t add a penny of their thoughts. So I’m pretty good at writing up my own annual reviews now.

Crazy!! This is a universal thing?!?!? I’ve been here not too long and have noticed that my manager is ALWAYS online but never responds and to make matters worse their manager is ALWAYS on vacation. It’s like a running joke inn our office.

What did I tell you? They inserted former Wachovia team members into middle level management.

Middle management here is the worst I’ve ever seen. Way too many lifers who have been in the same role for 15-20 plus years hiding in plain sight while doing no actual work or adding any value. Wells is either too cheap to pay out their severance or too stupid to identify these hacks. My manager is a professional email forwarder. He doesn’t even have access to half the systems we utilize (don’t ask me how this is possible). So when he gets questions from other teams or upper level management he literally can’t assist them. He will forward it to me or someone else on the team and then cut/paste our response to him back to his manager. Makes me vomit in my mouth even typing this.

I’m already thinking of ways to manage out my manager. The manager is this most lethargic individual I’ve ever met. This pets reminds me of the teacher, in that movie, Ferris Bueller’s Day off… Bueller, Bueller, Bueller…
Get my meaning?
If you’re a well-respected team member, then do whatever you can to make your managers life completely miserable. They will leave or transfer to another position.

These days, yes.

Managers used to have administrative support that would handle these things, but since they haven't been allowed to hire for a few years, why did they need that?

WFC has transitioned to the “do it-yourself” philosophy, which is contributing to the downfall of the bank. It all has to do with departments and people pushing off/eliminating services they previously provided in order to show they are cutting expenses. Rather than departments and employees working together for the good of the bank, they are all forcing you to “do it yourself”.

So your department probably previously had access to a local tech team, who understood your department, to whom you and your managers could turn to for help with various technological needs (onboarding, equipment issues, new releases etc). Those tech teams have been eliminated or offshored to a third world country.

So now: even though you were hired for your expertise as a CPA, a Trader, or an Attorney - you will spend half your time struggling with our matrix of outdated systems. And your manager is equally on his own, now having to perform services for the department which were previously provided by HR, IT, Travel, an Admin, even the mail room.

Yes, you made a mistake working here.

you were hiring because you have the skills to do the job so do it. As for access, my team keeps a one note document of the access we have obtained and how we obtained it however we are always having to go out and get new access and since you and not your manager will likely be the one doing the work you get to figure out how to get the access

Yes, and you're nearly always on your own to learn how to do the job you were hired for.

Heaven forbid someone have a training plan to get you on your way. You'd think your manager would want you to succeed so they can too.

I have the same lethargic supervisor. i’m having to find my own tools, begging people for help to get access and boring conference calls. Since I get paid every two weeks, I just keep opening trouble tickets and delaying everything. Hopefully, and if I’m really fortunate, I’ll get shuffled to another supervisor who has a pulse.
