Thread regarding Verizon Communications Inc. layoffs

Layoff Guess??

Meta laid off almost 11000 employees (13% of work force) and more to come in couple of months. Where does Verizon stand in lay offs part? do we expect the same amount of layoffs? If so, which orgs might effect?

There “was” a push to get 5ESS decommissioned by 2021. Much like the 3G shutdown, I see this can getting kicked down the road for quite some time.

I predict it will not be a strategic, or even a practicality/financial decision to decom the 5E. Instead we’ll maintain them until there becomes a parts shortage that inevitably jeopardizes repair times and we will have no choice but to migrate.

Since we already have SIP peering with most other carriers it will likely involve capacity upgrades if anything. (1G to 10G nodes, etc)

Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) replaces SS7 once the transition to 100% IP has taken place. When the switch is no longer used in the telephony space for Verizon and AT&T SS7 will follow. These are the goals of both companies it to rid themselves of TDM regardless if it's paid for decades ago or not. I've worked for both companies in TDM and they are aggressively degrowing the equipment and powering them down, it takes time to get customers and Government pushed over to IP platform.

The wireline SS7 network isn’t going anywhere. That’s infrastructure already PAID FOR many times over. In a world where EACH carrier basically doubled their outstanding debt to facilitate 5G rollout, this is exactly what we need to prop up the network (and balance sheets) at the handoff to other carriers.

I’m not sure about Verizon, but I was on a call with AT&T where their principal translations engineer remarked they had some 2000+ 5ESS switches active on their network.

Wireline days are numbered! DMS, 5ESS, etc.... switches to turn down within the next 2 years. If your in any of the supporting groups and not ready to retire start looking for other positions within the company.

Next rif is usually March or April and are usually smaller in size. Seems the goal is to make wireline a significantly smaller organization. I’m thankful I was on the wireline RIF list on the 27th. It will be brutal in 2023 for anyone left. More reductions coming in our service mgmt org. No one left but offshore service mgmt and they provide minimal value to customers and add a lot of frustration. A lot of good salespeople and sales engineers were let go in this round which is shows the leadership direction.

We are hearing the same in Wireline Operations. 10% cut in January.

The next RIF will be at the end of January 2023. Our Director has already asked for volunteers and said his leadership told him it will be a 10% cut. I am a Service Manager in VBG.

It's because of Ivan we have FiOS which is what is mainly keeping the non-Wireless part of Verizon afloat anymore. Without that and Wireless, we'd have been gobbled up long ago and retirement perks gone out the window. Sorry but it is true. Ivan was looking out for us all. He knew the business and where it was headed.

@1xri+1jDM5n79 This for sure. My guess would be that organization is half it's originating size by the end of 2023.

There will be cuts in VGS for sure. It won’t happen right away as the music is still playing while they are arranging the limited amount of chairs. Management layers need to go as spam of control gets enforced.

@1rfu+1jDM5n79 wasn’t that Lowell? He froze management pension and medical in 2006.

If Verizon can only add net 8,000 wireless customers in 3Q down from 12,000 in 2Q, my guess is more layoffs in the not too distant future. There is no work with no customers. T-Mo must be on a hiring spree with all the wireless customers they are stealing from Verizon with those lower cost price plans that Verizon leadership refuses to offer in order to be competitive. Magenta rules.

8-10% in February. Not a great time to be a 6v with no direct reports.

U can’t compare a huge tech company like meta and a telecom company. Meta makes money by inserting ads into your Facebook feed and selling your personal data. Verizon sells you 5yee that barely works and awesome Fios that does work.

RIF's are done for 2022. Starting in 2023 it's anyone's guess. Han's is hellbent on a $5B expense reduction next year, Verizon's biggest expense is labor. Use your imagination on where those cuts will come from.
