Confusing job titles

EM has confusing job titles. To add to the confusion, responsibilities are often vague and don’t line up anything that is needed. What exactly do the following people do?

Advisor on on special assignment?
Market Development?
Business Manager?

I'm still trying to figure out what the job of SCRUM master does? If I can't be a Scrum Master, can I be a SCRUM servant or slave?

How about “Transformation Lead”, or “Space Supervisor”?

This post and the comments have really made it clear to me that many of the people on this board have no idea how the company works or what people do and to make it worse don’t take the time to learn. Every role here is covered in the sda and job roles in CC. It literally explains what the skills are and what the job is and what the proficiency levels are. Y’all all just sound angry and bitter about things you don’t understand.

Agile Coach is responsible for educating teams who are transforming from a traditional way of work to an agile way of working.

My experience is they don’t know enough business domain knowledge or have enough technical expertise to do anything of value.

Absolute honest question that I hope someone here will answer:

What does an “Agile Coach” do?

ExxonMobil uses title deflation and title obfuscation as a way to retain employees IMO. Only way around it is to use industry standard titles on LinkedIn/resume when job searching. For example, an EM 'project engineer' would be a 'project manager' most other places.

A business manager ( no direct report) claimed he is a VP externally. Surprised he hasn’t been caught. He also inserted “Global” to his previous titles to make himself more important. Make a career of name dropping and inferring he has connections.

No idea what he does other than always asking others to send him their work products.

Can someone tell me what exactly does a Staffing & Development manager exactly do and what actual value they bring? I mean really, in this environment who do they actually staff, develop, and manage? Mine just dump me in the fire to burn.

"Digital Lead".

Let's break it down:

  • "Digital": some irrelevant team doing some irrelevant garbag3 with data and cloud for the Permian.
  • "Lead": this assignment is for a Hi-Po waiting for a supervisory role to get vacant.

Drain the swamp, Darren!

Any named Agile Role such as Program Manager, Product Manager, Staffing Development Manager, Product Owner etc is a joke. Too top heavy, seems like we have more Chief's than Indians

Recently saw an announcement for person assigned as “Workplace Violence Investigator”.

Do we need a full time violence investigator?

My favorite is when someone on LinkedIn says they’re a “director” at EM. EM doesn’t have directors.

There was once a guy who claimed to be the CIO of ExxonMobil. Again, a position we’ve never formally had.

"Change manager" or "digital program manager" are good example of those.

WTF this means?

We all know that "change" is managed top-down, so a "change manager" is basically a glorified admin making over $300k waiting for orders from headquarters to execute whatever the consultors tell the executive committee to do.

We also know that "a digital program" is buying whatever cloud platform from SLB or HAL or other cloud company and letting them squeeze as many $ as they please.

If they want to reduce structural costs, they should start with trimming all this middle management fat.

Drain the Swamp Darren!!!!
