If job performance, productivity and retention are some basic indicators of the quality of new hires, then I think this company will be in big trouble. I'm not saying that all those who have been hired here recently are bad employees (there are some fantastic ones). However, when I compare the time when I and some of my colleagues got a job here and the majority of newbies now, there is a noticeable drop in quality, as well as a general employee engagement drop-off. I'm counting the days until retirement and I'm trying to explain myself as to how it happened.

Young workers are smarter and hard working. Old workers are jaded and have bad attitudes. AT&T will be a much better company once we get rid of those.
Idk what group the OP is in, but if you’re in tech, quite the opposite. Most new hires have a lot of experience and expertise older employees do not have. As you linger at one company too long in tech, your skills get stale. Not to mention post pension hires don’t have a reason to stick around. I just jump to the next company. I’ve been here 10 years btw, so I’m new compared to a lot of folks.
Lots of details missing and assumptions made…..

And the experience of the new folks you mention is comparable to what you had when you joined decades ago? Perhaps the experience level of the new folks you mention is exactly what T prefers and willing to pay for. It may be exactly what T wants and you observations / opinions are meaningless at that point.
It is what happens when you hire someone based on the color of their skin, their gender, or their se-ual orientation, and not based on the content of their character, the knowledge they bring to the job at hand, or their initiative to learn.
we need to look pass their skill set (or the lack of).....Look how cheap their pay is. That is what leadership likes to see. We can sacrifice quality for cheaper wages.
I've also seen some performance issues with newer hires, but the greater pool of questionable employees are those who have been around for more than 15 years and not taken any action whatsoever to maintain or update their technical skills. Talk about a drop in quality and relevance!
They laugh when you fall and walk crippled, and hope you get fried. Paper work is copy paste from the last new guy. Union wants some of your money and sides with incompetent managers. Thats the way it is. Don’t worry
Says an old guy whose time has passed.
Supply cabinet is full of pencils & post-it-notes.
Cannot leave until the supply cabinet contents is in my closet at home.
Got eye on aa & aaa batteries. They are next.
Company is offering a 4 finger discount, self serve.
Agreed. If i were a new employee, i would produce at the minimum level to stay afloat. Get a few years experience, take advantage of the tuition reimbursement or some other educational opportunity and hit the road. T is to communications in the same way DirecTV is to cable/statellite...irrelevant.
Why be fantastic at T if you’re a new hire? The company openly wants you out the door before you hit 5 years and there’s virtually no way to advance your career here.
