Thread regarding Intel Corp. layoffs

Would Internships ever get canceled?

In previous times of layoffs has intel ever canceled already signed intern offers for the summer? I know no one knows what will happen this time but just wondering if this has ever happened before.

Interns are extremely cheap labor. Very unlikely to turn that away even in times like these.

OP: it’s not impossible, but Intel is very unlikely to go down that route. Not a ton of savings to be had in doing that, plus it trashes the Intel name among up-and-coming engineers that liked Intel enough to intern here.

I was at a much smaller company that did this about 18 years ago and it was a emergency financial situation far beyond what Intel is experiencing now (enormous government contract that was funding hundreds of employees was suddenly cancelled). It’s something that does happen in the real world though.

Class of 2016 here. I interned right after ACT. Intel sent an email letting us know that the internships were still happening. Intel gave a paid week off to the interns who had a start date on the week they implemented the layoffs.
My group had a hiring freeze through the end of the year but they were able to extend an offer for October 2016.

I've been at Intel for over 30 years and I've never heard of it happening. I have heard of a couple of cases where a team/group was eliminated and incoming interns came in and started working at different job than they originally applied for.

I can’t remember that happening. As you say though, anything is possible
