Transfer to another group

At one time I approached my manager about the possibility of transferring to another group. That never happened. On the other hand, some here obviously manage very easily to join a group in which they would prefer to work. What are your experiences? How did you manage to make the transfer?

@1fjwp+1jJaeWx9 Provided you are telling the truth here……. I have some bad news. Your prior supervisor(s) straight up lied to you about your ranking. I have seen it done….

There really is very little preventing a supervisor from saying whatever necessary to placate you while your ranking can be substantially worse. No control check, no consequences to the supervisor. If you find out later you were lied to…it’s your word against theirs and you are the “disgruntled employee “…..

I consistently ranked top quint/outstanding and received no transfer or CL promotion over the last 7 years. This year my ranking dropped to VG and when everyone got huge raises, I got 4%. I no longer have any expectation of career growth and am just hoping I don’t lose more of my salary to inflation.

I really have no idea how I landed here, but I don’t think it’s just ranking. I think when your managers don’t care about your career, you’re just screwed. They have this whole initiative to develop careers, but I’ll see no changes. Too old to leave at this point, but will retire as soon as I’m eligible. I’m so disappointed in how my career turned out.

Not sure how to switch to a desired new team but I do have a FULL-PROOF way to guarantee a transfer out of your current team, just not sure where you’ll end up:

Mention to your boss and in passing to his boss that:

  1. You are HAPPY on your current team.
  2. You are COMFORTABLE on your current team and want to stay.
  3. (Nuclear Option) That you have mastered the work on your current team and are enjoying it.

You will now to transferred out in 6 months or less, guaranteed.

Gotta learn to use the toxicity to your advantage.

Be very careful about switching groups, particularly if changing job families. When push comes to shove, the job family owners will always keep their long time home-grown members and PIP/NSI the newcomer without regard for true performance. I speak from experience.

XOM is just a HiPo farm; Donkey gets squeezed dry and thrown under the bus on the street. LOL.

HiPo gets transferred; Donkey won't; simple as that!

You’re better off leaving if you are not on the radar for career progression. People responsible for your career may have little understanding of roles and needed competencies. May also not advocating for you. If you make it known you want a transfer, there’s also a good chance you end up worst off than before.

Better off be the master of your own destiny rather than have someone shove you into a job. Be proactive. If all else fail, leaving may be your only option.

If no mobility then you have a toxic boss.

What was your rank group? That’s a huge factor.

Depends on your boss. If it’s a self serving toxic woman or man that most of us have then your wasting your time. Do your job the best you can and try to wait them out. As others have mentioned network with the group you would like to go to and chat with their boss.

You need to make a network outside of your immediate job scope. To do this you need to take on initiatives outside your normal job roll. If you do these things you will find your influence of others and your evaluation performance will increase. This will lead to higher ranking and open doors for you. And since you know more people more opportunities will present themselves.

Is it political? Partially Yes. But it's real life.

People here are overthinking it. There just needs to be a greater desire to fill a ho-e in the group you want to go to than to fill the ho-e you’ll leave behind. Suggest a backfill for your current role and you’d be surprised how open your manager will be to let you go.

It’s difficult to transfer between groups unless you are a HiPo. Once you become a HiPo then it’s much easier. Talk to your supervisor on how you can become a HiPo. Do it today.
