Thread regarding IBM layoffs

IBM keeps putting people with no experience in managerial positions

The problem is IBM keeps putting people with absolutely no practicitoner experiences in managerial positions. These practices need to meet today's modern technological standard and not from decades ago. They blindly put those managers based on a lateral band levels and hope for the best, but those managers without practices cannot lead by example because obviously they have no experiences in the field they are in. In stead, they hold multiple unproductive meetings with fellow confused managers without coming to an ideal solution then they communicate their clueless solution to their teams. They also make bad hiring decisions due to lack of practical knowledge. Infinite bad cycles. This is not limited to technical roles but also other areas in IBM. An on point post from @4vpz+1jx40g5Q.

HR, Senior Leadership, Enablement teams, et al. are still dependent to management nominations on awards, recognitions, training course completion, HR related reviews to managers. These highlight the fact they have no clue on who is performing what. Please stop.

The old days are gone.

Management does not write reviews nor do they really assign work to people. You write your own review so keep a work journal with hours and project details.

Show your replacement how to do the job but he needs to take his own notes. I have found that once they understand how much work they will have to do they will move on before they let you go. There is no more retirement for the normal employee so get over it. If you are only 50 you can find a new job. I took a 30k drop but got 50k back within a year.

Also the person that replaced me left after 3 months.

A company should not define you.

My manager should win the best actor/actress academy award. Things they say they will follow up and no action has been taken for so long can be taken as maliciously intended by this manager when there aren't anything else stopping them aside from themselves to progress.

I had good and bad managers in my 11 years at ibm. One thing that is really affecting the quality of the leadership is this unofficial (?) diversity quota that weights more background and looks than skill. The job should be for the best qualified person regardless of anything else. Great ppl is skipped because there is not enough x or y employees at that level. Unfortunately in this topic the grass is not greener elsewhere. Btw I am part of an ethnic minority living in North America

Great comment about the bad hiring decisions. Anyone with skills is surrounded by confused people who make twice as much.

It's called nepotism. You're just noticing this now?
We had a PM that did not know what TCP/IP was.

I feel your pain. It’s impossible to fix since this culture is so embedded into the structure of IBM.

It absolutely sucks, but lean into the fact your manager knows nothing about what you do. If a task tasks you 1 hour, tell them it takes 3 days. They can’t argue with you if they don’t understand.

I hope you find a lifeboat before the whole thing sinks.
